FRP can be a lightweight, impact-resistant glazing option, but the right choice depends on the panel’s light performance, UV protection, fire classification, profile, and compatibility with the frame.
What a fiberglass greenhouse shell is
Greenhouse FRP panels are sheets made from glass fibers embedded in polyester resin. They are used as glazing and are available in flat and corrugated forms. The term “shell” describes the cladding around a greenhouse frame; it does not identify one standard kit, panel shape, or installation system.
UF/IFAS describes FRP as lightweight and impact resistant compared with glass. It also says FRP light transmission is slightly lower than that of glass and polyethylene. These are general comparisons, not specifications for every panel. A particular product’s technical sheet is the place to check its measured light transmission and other performance details. UF/IFAS greenhouse glazing guidance
When FRP panels may be a good fit
FRP may suit a greenhouse when low panel weight and impact resistance matter, provided the chosen product meets the crop’s light needs and the structure’s requirements. It is not automatically the best choice for every frame or growing environment: formulations, surface protection, profiles, and product specifications vary.

- Strong Material - 10 pieces of 8 x 4 ft polycarbonate panels, approximately 0.24 inches thick, feature a twin-wall design for outstanding impact resistance, making it withstand hail and falling objects without cracking or breaking, is the perfect material for greenhouses
- Weather Resistant - Greenhouse panels can withstand extreme weather conditions, ranging from -40°C to 120°C, including hurricanes, heavy rainfall, and snow loads. With excellent heat preservation and insulation, they ensure a stable and comfortable environment for plants year-round, extending the growing season
- High Transparency - The polycarbonate roof panels feature highly transparent material with a UV-resistant coating, effectively blocking 99.9% of UV while allowing an 89% light transmission. The double-layer structure diffuses light softly, promoting healthy and robust plant growth
- Easy to Work with - The lightweight greenhouse replacement panels not only save on handling and installation costs but also offer easy cutting without cracking or splintering. Additionally, they can be cold-bent to create curved roofs, making them perfect for DIY garden builders
- Widely Used - Lightweight and clear polycarbonate sheets are ideal for greenhouses, pool roofs, aisle roofs, garden fences, cold frames, aquarium lids, chicken coop roofs, hurricane windows, and more. Combining aesthetics with practicality, they offer versatile solutions for various applications
- Light: Compare product-specific transmission and diffusion information with the crop’s needs. Do not treat a general material comparison as a panel rating.
- Impact and weather: Consider the conditions at the site and the panel maker’s stated limitations. Suitability for local wind and snow loads must be established for the actual structure and product.
- Frame and weight: Check panel weight and the greenhouse frame’s support arrangement rather than assuming existing supports will work with a replacement.
- Fire: Oklahoma State University Extension warns that some greenhouse covering materials, including FRP, are highly flammable. Check the specific panel’s fire classification and applicable local requirements; the word “fiberglass” alone does not establish compliance. Oklahoma State University Extension guidance on greenhouse covering materials
- Maintenance and warranty: Review the product’s care instructions and warranty. Oklahoma State notes that maintenance may be necessary to realize a manufacturer’s lifespan claims, so a broad service-life figure should not be assumed for all FRP greenhouse panels.
UV protection and panel life
Ultraviolet exposure is an important weakness to account for. UF/IFAS says FRP sheets degrade under UV light and notes that resistance can be improved with polyvinyl fluoride coatings or acrylic additions to the polyester resin. Ask the supplier what UV protection the particular panel has, which side faces outward, and what the manufacturer says about retaining clarity under the intended exposure.
There is no universal FRP greenhouse-panel lifespan established by the cited extension guidance. Dipcraft gives a 20–30 year service-life range for its fiberglass skylight panels, but that is a supplier claim for its product and application, not a general life expectancy for greenhouse cladding. How FRP compares with greenhouse polycarbonate
Corrugated polycarbonate is a real alternative to FRP. Palram markets DYNAGLAS and SUNTUF Plus as greenhouse coverings, and describes SUNTUF Plus for greenhouse use and retrofit of fiberglass-covered structures. These are manufacturer product descriptions, not independent evidence that polycarbonate is always superior. Palram DYNAGLAS and Palram SUNTUF Plus

- 8 LARGE-FORMAT PANELS – Includes eight translucent panels, each measuring approximately 8 x 4 ft and covering 32 sq. ft. Provides up to 256 sq. ft. of total coverage before trimming, overlap or installation waste.
- MORE COVERAGE, FEWER SEAMS – Each 8 x 4 ft sheet covers four times the area of a 4 x 2 ft panel, helping reduce joints, connectors and repeated cuts across large greenhouse roofs and sidewalls.
- 6MM TWIN-WALL INSULATION – The 0.24 in (6mm) fluted structure provides added rigidity and helps slow heat transfer. These are non-structural covering panels and require proper framing, support spacing and secure installation.
- ONE-SIDE UV PROTECTION – The UV-coated side maintains natural light transmission while helping block harmful UV rays. Install the marked UV side facing the sun. Translucent panels diffuse light but are not glass-clear.
- EASY TO FABRICATE – Cut and drill with common everyday tools for use by DIYers and contractors. Impact-resistant polycarbonate resin offers ASTM E84 Class A material performance for greenhouses, porch enclosures and garden shelters.
- Light transmission and diffusion for the crop
- UV protection and expected clarity retention
- Impact resistance and relevant weather conditions
- Thermal insulation, if specified for the product
- Panel weight and frame loading
- Profile, dimensions, support spacing, and compatible fasteners
- Maintenance requirements, fire classification, and product warranty
For one product-specific reference point, KAL-LITE reports 85–90% solar transmission for its Sun-Lite HP FRP glazing, which it identifies for greenhouses and cold frames. That range applies to the named product, not to FRP panels generally. KAL-LITE Sun-Lite HP

How to replace panels on an existing greenhouse
- Measure the existing panels. Record their width, length, thickness if available, and the shape and spacing of corrugations or other profile features.
- Identify the frame and attachment method. Note support spacing and how the current panels are secured. A replacement’s profile and fasteners must match the intended panel and frame system.
- Compare product documentation. Confirm the candidate panel’s greenhouse application, UV protection, outward-facing side, light information, weight, maintenance, fire classification, and warranty.
- Use product-specific installation guidance. Follow the selected manufacturer’s instructions for support, fastening, and handling. Dipcraft provides profile and fastener guides for its products; they should not be treated as universal instructions for other panels. Dipcraft fiberglass panel resources
- Check site and code requirements. Have the frame and cladding evaluated for local wind and snow loads and check applicable fire and building requirements with the relevant local authority. A general panel description cannot establish that an installation complies.
