For a healthy indoor fiddle-leaf fig, give it bright indirect light, water when the soil has dried rather than on a fixed schedule, use a pot with drainage holes, and keep it away from drafts and sudden temperature changes. Fiddle-leaf fig is Ficus lyrata, a tropical evergreen; its outdoor landscape care is different from growing it in a houseplant pot.
How do I care for a fiddle-leaf fig?
Think of care as balancing light, water, drainage, and a stable location. Check the soil before watering, make sure excess water can escape, and watch for changes in the plant’s environment when leaves develop spots or fall.
- Choose a bright spot with indirect light, where the leaves are not shaded.
- Water based on soil dryness, not the day of the week.
- Use a container with drainage holes and empty the runoff dish.
- Keep the plant away from cold drafts, heating or cooling vents, and abrupt temperature changes.
- Turn the pot when you water so light reaches the plant more evenly.
Ficus lyrata is native to tropical western and central Africa. It is also grown outdoors in suitable climates, but landscape recommendations should not be treated as instructions for an indoor container. The Royal Horticultural Society’s plant profile and UF/IFAS’s species fact sheet describe its broader cultivation context.
How much light does a fiddle-leaf fig need?
Place it in bright, indirect light. A bright window softened by a sheer curtain can reduce the risk of direct sun scorching the leaves. North Carolina Cooperative Extension also recommends bright indirect light or partial shade and protection from afternoon sun.

How often should I water a fiddle-leaf fig?
There is no dependable weekly schedule for every home: drying speed changes with the pot, potting mix, light, temperature, and indoor conditions. Instead, feel the soil before watering. UF/IFAS recommends watering when the top inch is dry. Maryland Extension advises letting houseplant figs become fairly dry between thorough waterings and checking below the surface.

- When it has dried to the appropriate depth, water thoroughly so the root area is moistened.
- Let excess water drain, then empty the saucer or runoff dish.
Maryland Certified Professional Horticulturist Miri wrote, “Houseplant Figs (Fiddle-leaf as well as Weeping Fig and others) grow best when allowed to get fairly dry between soakings.” The answer was published July 27, 2020, by Ask Extension / Maryland Home & Garden Information Center. The dry-top-inch trigger and the advice to let the root area dry fairly between soakings are practical checks, not a fixed interval.
What temperature and humidity does it prefer?
UF/IFAS gives 65–75°F as a preferred indoor temperature range and recommends household humidity above 40%. These are source-specific care guidelines, not a guarantee that every home will produce the same results. North Carolina Cooperative Extension says performance is best above 55°F and notes that fluctuations around heating or cooling vents may be associated with brown spots.

Choose a stable location away from cold drafts and vents that blow hot or cold air directly onto the plant. Avoid moving it repeatedly between markedly different conditions.
What soil and pot should I use?
For indoor growing, prioritize a pot with drainage holes and a mix that drains well. Do not let the container sit in standing runoff. A decorative outer pot is fine if the growing pot can be removed so excess water can drain.

Old potting soil can compress, drain slowly, and leave roots with less oxygen. Maryland Extension identifies spring as a good time to repot, while noting that repotting can be done at another time when plant health makes it necessary. The available guidance does not establish one universal repotting interval. For other cultivation settings, the RHS describes peat-free, loam-based compost for glasshouse growing and humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil for outdoor conditions; those recommendations are not interchangeable with a schedule for repotting indoor plants.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why is my fiddle-leaf fig dropping leaves or developing spots?
Leaf drop can follow either overwatering or underwatering, so it does not identify the cause by itself. Brown spots and damaged leaves also need context: excessive direct sun can scorch foliage, while temperature changes may be associated with brown spots. Maryland Extension describes edema as a water imbalance commonly associated with overwatering, but a symptom alone may not be enough to diagnose a particular plant.

- Brown spots: Look for recent temperature fluctuations or exposure to heating and cooling vents, as well as watering issues.

Damaged leaves do not heal. Focus on correcting the conditions affecting new growth rather than expecting existing marks to disappear. North Carolina Cooperative Extension’s plant profile discusses light, water sensitivity, temperature, symptoms, and possible pests.
What pests should I watch for?
Fiddle-leaf figs can be susceptible to red spider mites, thrips, mealybugs, and scale insects under glass, according to the RHS. North Carolina Cooperative Extension also lists scale, aphids, mealybugs, thrips, and spider mites as possible houseplant pests. These are pests to monitor for, not signs that an infestation is inevitable.
Is a fiddle-leaf fig safe to handle around children and pets?
The sap can irritate skin and is toxic if consumed. Wear gloves when pruning or propagating, and place the plant where children or pets who might chew it cannot reach it. The RHS also identifies the plant as a skin allergen and advises protective equipment when handling it.
Can you propagate a fiddle-leaf fig?
Propagation options listed by the RHS include seed, leaf-bud cuttings, and semi-hardwood cuttings; UF/IFAS also lists layering and cuttings. For a home grower, cuttings or layering are options to explore, but the cited guidance does not establish a guaranteed success rate or timeline.
