Choose plants for your region, site and target butterflies rather than relying on a universal seed mix. These six steps offer a practical starting point for U.S. home gardens, including small ones.
1. Start with butterflies and plants suited to your location
Butterflies and suitable plants vary by region, climate and garden conditions. Begin with local native-plant resources or an extension service, then narrow the choices to species that can thrive in your soil, light and moisture conditions. A small planting can support local wildlife, but its value depends on what grows there and which butterflies use those plants.
For monarch-focused planting, the Xerces Society’s regional nectar plant guides and Plants for Monarchs tool can help identify native host and nectar plants by location and site conditions. These resources concern monarchs; they are not a complete planting list for every butterfly. Xerces describes its monarch guides as working documents based on observed nectaring records and cautions that not every listed plant suits every site. Check availability with a reputable local or regional nursery.
2. Plant for caterpillars as well as adult butterflies
Nectar flowers feed adult butterflies, but they do not necessarily provide food for caterpillars. Many butterflies lay eggs on particular host plants, and their caterpillars may depend on those plants for food. Include host plants suited to the butterfly species you hope to support, alongside nectar sources. A garden with plants for the full life cycle can serve more than a flower-only planting; the United States Botanic Garden writes, “A garden that includes plants for the entire life cycle will attract a variety of native butterflies.”

3. Stagger flowers across the local season
Select plants with overlapping bloom periods so nectar is available at different points in the season, rather than having the garden flower all at once. Use a region-specific plant list to compare bloom timing and site needs. A seed packet labeled for butterflies is not a substitute for checking which species it contains and whether those plants are appropriate for your location.
4. Choose a sunny, sheltered spot
Many butterfly-garden plants need sun, and butterflies benefit from places to warm themselves. Choose a sunny site and, where possible, shelter it from prevailing wind. Nearby shrubs or trees can provide wind protection, but position them so they do not shade plants that require full sun. A flat rock can offer a warm basking surface.

5. Offer damp soil and places to rest
Butterflies can take up water and minerals from damp soil. A shallow, damp patch of soil or sand provides a puddling area without relying on open water as the only source. Keep the spot damp rather than creating a deep basin, and leave nearby places where butterflies can rest.
6. Keep pesticides away from the habitat
Pesticides can harm butterflies and other insects the garden is intended to support. The Xerces Society advises against applying pesticides in or near gardens and other habitat areas. Check with the nursery about how plants were treated, and consult local guidance before managing pests. Avoid treating the garden as a place where pesticide use is automatically safe simply because a product is marketed for home gardens.

How to choose plants without relying on a universal recipe
Compare candidate plants by whether they are native and suitable locally, whether they serve as host plants, nectar sources or both, when they bloom, and the sun and moisture conditions they require. Favor species available from credible local or regional suppliers. For a monarch planting, Xerces notes its guides reflect observed nectaring and are working documents; a listed plant still needs to suit your particular site.

The Xerces Society reported on July 30, 2026, that monarch populations have declined by over 80% in recent decades, attributing the decline in part to loss of native milkweed and nectar plants. That figure is specific to monarchs and should not be read as a statistic for all butterfly species. The cited sources do not establish a single general decline figure for all butterflies.
