Red maple, sugar maple, sweetgum, quaking aspen and oak are five trees whose autumn leaves can range from scarlet and orange to yellow, purple and russet. Color is a useful clue, not a reliable identification on its own: shades and timing vary by species, location and year.
Five trees and their fall colors
The USDA Forest Service notes, “Certain colors of leaves are characteristic of particular species of trees.” The ranges below are characteristic examples, not guarantees for every tree or season. These descriptions are based mainly on U.S. sources; local species presence and conditions matter.
| Tree | Characteristic fall color | Useful context |
|---|---|---|
| Red maple (Acer rubrum) | Brilliant scarlet, or orange to red | Individual trees may show different shades. USDA Forest Service; Iowa State University Extension. |
| Sugar maple (Acer saccharum) | Orange-red | Described by the USDA Forest Service. |
| American sweetgum (Liquidambar styraciflua) | Yellow through red to purple | The range is listed by Iowa State University Extension. |
| Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) | Golden yellow or yellow | Described by the USDA Forest Service and Iowa State University Extension. |
| Oaks | Red, brown or russet | This is a broad group description; oak species vary, and oaks often color later than many other trees. USDA Forest Service. |
How to use color when identifying a tree
Color can narrow your search, but overlapping shades make it a weak standalone test: maples and oaks can both turn red, while several species show yellow. Check leaf shape and other tree features, then compare them with a regional field guide if you need a confident identification. The trees in this guide may not all be present in your area.
Why do leaves change color in the fall?
As days shorten, deciduous trees stop producing chlorophyll, the pigment that makes leaves green, and shift sugars and nutrients toward parts of the tree better suited to cold weather. As the green fades, yellow and orange carotenoids already present in leaves become visible. In some species and conditions, anthocyanins contribute red, purple or maroon hues. Why does fall leaf color vary from year to year?
Color depends partly on weather and local conditions, so the same tree may not look identical every autumn. Warm, sunny days followed by cool nights are associated with stronger color in many species, according to the University of Wisconsin Arboretum. A hard early freeze or frost can interrupt color development, contribute to poor color and prompt leaves to drop early, as NOAA explains.

There is no single national calendar: timing varies by species and local conditions. Oaks tend to show color later than many other trees, according to the USDA Forest Service. As one regional example—not a forecast for other places—the Missouri Department of Conservation describes Missouri’s fall-color display as gradual, from mid-September to mid-October.
