You can flatten a board without a jointer by supporting it so it cannot rock or flex during machining: use edge runners for a slight cup, a shimmed sled for twist or warp, or a router carriage jig for stock wider than your planer. A thickness planer makes the face opposite a stable reference parallel; it does not reliably flatten a distorted board fed directly into it.
Why a planer alone may not flatten a board
A jointer removes material from the underside as you guide the board across its cutterhead, establishing one flat reference face. A thickness planer cuts the upper face while pressure rollers hold the stock against the bed. If the underside is twisted or cupped, the rollers can force it temporarily flat; once the board exits and the pressure releases, it may spring back, leaving it just as distorted, only thinner. The workaround is to stabilize the board or support it on a flat carrier so the planer can cut a dependable reference face. WOOD Magazine explains this limitation and the methods below.
Choose a method for the board’s shape and width
| Board condition | Method | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Slight cup, within planer capacity | Edge runners, then planer | Both runners need flat bearing surfaces; remove them after flattening the first face. |
| Twist or warp | Shimmed planer sled | Shim until the workpiece is stable; support the sled as it exits to help reduce snipe. |
| Wider than planer capacity | Router carriage over a plywood base | Requires jig construction, secure workholding, shallow cuts, dust collection, and sanding. |
| Severe twist | Hand-plane high spots, then use a shimmed sled | Removing high spots first can reduce the amount of shimming needed. |
| Extra-wide or severely cupped | Rip into narrower pieces, flatten separately, then restore the edges | Mark the pieces so they can be reassembled in their original orientation. |
The source does not provide measured comparisons of speed, cost, or accuracy, so the appropriate approach depends on the board and the equipment available.
Flatten a slightly cupped board with runners
Runners support the board’s edges and keep the cupped face from rocking in the planer. This is intended for mild cup, not a loose or unstable setup.

- Cut two runners about 2 inches longer than the board. Make them thick enough to stand about 1/8 inch proud of the board.
- Place the board with its cupped face toward the support surface. Attach one runner along each edge with glue or double-sided tape, and check that both runners sit flat on the work surface.
- Draw pencil or scribble lines across the face to track the material being removed. Feed the board and runners through the planer in light passes until the exposed face is flat.
- Remove the runners, flip the board so the flattened face rests on the planer bed, and plane the opposite face to make it parallel.
For extra-wide or heavily cupped stock
If the board is too wide or its cup makes it difficult to feed, WOOD Magazine suggests ripping it into two equal-width pieces with the cupped side facing up, flattening each piece with runners, then re-ripping or router-jointing the mating edges before gluing. Mark the ends before cutting so the pieces return to their original orientation. This approach can reduce material removal compared with trying to flatten the full width at once.
Use a shimmed sled for twist or warp
A sled gives a twisted or warped board a stable, flat underside while the planer cuts its upper face. Keep the sled large enough to support the work but within your planer’s capacity.

- Make a flat MDF or plywood sled a couple of inches longer and wider than the workpiece. Add a trailing-end cleat thinner than the board to keep it from sliding forward.
- Set the board against the cleat. Press opposite corners to locate gaps and rocking points.
- Insert wedges or shims under the board until it rests without wobbling. Remove and tape the shims in place one at a time, returning each to its exact location.
- Feed the sled and workpiece through the planer in light passes until the exposed face is flat. Support the sled as it exits the planer to help avoid snipe.
- Remove the board from the sled, flip it so the flattened face sits on the planer bed, and plane the opposite face parallel.
For severe twist, hand-plane the high spots on the board’s underside before shimming. That can reduce how much support the board needs and make the sled setup simpler.
Flatten stock wider than the planer with a router jig
A router carriage can traverse a board that is too wide for your planer. The setup is more involved, and the routed surface will need sanding to remove cutter marks.

- Build a plywood base large enough for the workpiece, with rails that guide a carriage across the board. The carriage must straddle the base and hold the router securely; the source describes mounting the router to an acrylic plate.
- Shim the workpiece until it cannot rock, then trap it with cleats so it cannot shift during routing. A vacuum-hose fitting on the router plate can help connect dust collection.
- Fit a suitable flat-bottom planer or dado bit, and rout back and forth across the face in cuts no deeper than 1/8 inch. Advance the carriage along the length in shallow passes until the face is flat.
- Flip the board and repeat to flatten the second face, then sand both faces to remove router marks.
Confirm that the bit’s shank, diameter, and depth capability suit your router and jig. The source names a cutter type but does not establish current product availability or specifications for a particular model.

Whichever method establishes the first flat face, that face becomes the reference for the next operation. Flip the board and machine the opposite face with the flattened side supported against the planer bed, or use the router jig for the second face if the stock exceeds planer capacity. This produces two flat, parallel faces suitable for further stock preparation.
