The right combination must suit the building’s proportions and work with its pitch, structure, drainage design, weather exposure, installation requirements, and locally adopted code. No single roof style or material is best for every house.
Roof form and roof covering are different choices
A roof’s form describes its shape and silhouette. Its covering is the material or system installed over the roof structure. A gable roof, for example, could use an eligible shingle, tile, or other covering; the form alone does not establish which covering is suitable.
Keep the decisions connected, but assess them separately: choose a form that works with the building’s design, then verify that the proposed covering and full assembly meet pitch, structural, drainage, code, and manufacturer requirements.
Common roof forms and how they shape a building
These basic descriptions help compare silhouette and massing; they are not guarantees of weather performance or suitability.

Gable
Two sloping planes meet at a ridge, leaving triangular end walls beneath the roof. The paired slopes and prominent ends create a readily visible roof profile.
Hip
Sloping planes rise from each exterior wall and meet at a ridge or point. The roof’s planes wrap around the building rather than ending in triangular gables.

Mansard
Steep lower slopes extend around the building beneath a comparatively shallow upper portion. The change between lower and upper roof planes is a defining visual feature.
Flat or low-slope
This roof looks nearly horizontal, but it still needs a designed route for water to drain. “Flat” should not be taken to mean that drainage can be ignored.

Match the roof to the building’s architecture
Start with the building’s existing or planned proportions, rather than treating roof style as a standalone decoration. Compare the roof’s silhouette, how its planes relate to the walls, and whether its scale and geometry feel consistent with the rest of the building and its surroundings.
- For a strong central ridge and visible end walls: consider whether a gable’s two planes and triangular ends suit the building’s massing.
- For a roof that slopes on every side: assess how a hip roof’s planes relate to the building’s perimeter and overall proportions.
- For a single dominant roof plane: consider whether a shed form complements the building’s profile and the intended direction of drainage.
- For a roof with a distinct lower and upper slope: evaluate whether a gambrel or mansard’s more articulated silhouette fits the building, not just whether the form is visually appealing.
- For a near-horizontal appearance: assess a flat or low-slope design together with its drainage approach and eligible roof assembly.
These are design prompts, not a historical-style taxonomy or performance ranking. The available references do not establish that a particular form is best for a specific architectural style or climate.

Check covering compatibility with roof pitch
Pitch is commonly written as a ratio: 2:12 means the roof rises 2 units for every 12 units of horizontal run. Minimums vary by code, product, assembly, and location. The following examples are from Chapter 9 of the 2023 Oregon Residential Specialty Code; they are not universal rules.
| Roof covering | Minimum slope in the 2023 Oregon Residential Specialty Code | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| Asphalt shingles | 2:12 | The code permits them only at slopes of 2:12 or greater. |
| Clay or concrete tile | 2.5:12 | The code requires at least a 2.5:12 slope. |
| Thermoset or thermoplastic single-ply membrane | 0.25:12 | The code sets this minimum for drainage. |
These requirements apply in the code’s jurisdiction and should not be assumed to apply in another state or locality. Before selecting a covering, confirm the code edition and amendments adopted by the authority where the building is located, and verify the proposed product’s installation requirements. The National Park Service architectural standards index lists the 2024 International Residential Code (IRC) among its references, but that listing is not itself a project-specific code determination.
Evaluate the whole roof assembly, not just its appearance
A covering has to function as part of a roof assembly. The locally applicable code, product documentation, and project design determine what is required. In Oregon, Chapter 9 of the 2023 residential code includes provisions addressing roof-covering fire classification, wind resistance for asphalt shingles, drainage, flashing, and installation under applicable code provisions and manufacturer instructions.
- Structure: Verify that the framing can support the proposed covering and applicable loads. The project-specific capacity is not established by the roof’s appearance or form.
- Weather exposure: Check locally relevant rain, snow, wind, wildfire, and temperature conditions against local rules and product documentation. Do not infer a climate-performance ranking from a roof-form label.
- Drainage: Plan where water goes and how the design handles valleys, roof penetrations, intersections, and changes in slope or direction. Low-slope designs still need drainage.
- Flashing and installation: Confirm how joints and transitions will be flashed and that the assembly will be installed according to applicable code provisions and the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Fire and wind provisions: Check the requirements that apply to the jurisdiction, exposure, product, and assembly; they are not identical for every roof.
A practical decision sequence
- Describe the design goal. Identify the roof silhouette and proportions that fit the building, without assuming that a preferred form dictates the covering.
- Establish the proposed pitch. Confirm the actual slope for each roof area, especially where the design has multiple planes or transitions.
- Screen coverings for eligibility. Compare the pitch with requirements in the locally adopted code and the product’s installation instructions. Use the Oregon figures above only as Oregon-code examples.
- Check structure and exposure. Have the proposed assembly assessed for the building’s framing and relevant local loads and weather conditions.
- Resolve water-management details. Review drainage paths, valleys, penetrations, intersections, slope changes, and flashing as part of the design.
- Confirm code and installation details before committing. Check the code edition and local amendments with the authority having jurisdiction, then verify product classification and installation requirements for the selected assembly.
What cannot be determined from a style name alone
A label such as “gable,” “tile,” or “low-slope” cannot establish code compliance, structural adequacy, local weather suitability, project cost, maintenance needs, lifespan, or energy savings. Those answers depend on the building, location, selected product and assembly, and project-specific requirements. No comparable local price or lifespan figures are established here, so a cost or longevity ranking would be misleading.
