Use bleach only if the label permits it, and air-dry the sheets so you can check the result before applying dryer heat. If the mark looks rust-like, skip chlorine bleach: it can make rust discoloration worse.
How do I get yellow stains out of white sheets?
Yellowing on sheets often comes from sweat and skin oils. Oil residue can become more visible as it oxidizes during storage, even on linens that seemed clean when put away. That is a common explanation, not a diagnosis: water minerals, chlorine-related damage, fabric type, and earlier heat exposure can also affect the marks. Whirlpool’s sheet-care guidance discusses body oils and sweat, while Clorox’s stain guidance notes that oily residue on stored linens may oxidize.
- Check the sheet’s care label. Confirm the fiber and permitted wash temperature, and whether chlorine bleach is allowed. If the fabric is colored or you are unsure how it will respond, test a proposed product in a hidden area only if its label allows this.
- Pretreat likely oily stains. Apply liquid laundry detergent to the yellowed area. Clorox’s pillowcase guidance recommends detergent pretreatment for oily body soil; follow the detergent’s own directions rather than assuming a universal amount or soak time. See Clorox’s guidance for hair-oil stains on pillowcases.
- Wash according to the fabric label. Use detergent and the hottest water the sheet care label permits. Add chlorine bleach only if both the sheet label and the bleach product allow it for that fabric. If chlorine bleach is unsuitable, choose an oxygen-bleach or color-safe product labeled for the sheet and follow its directions. The American Cleaning Institute’s stain guide describes bleach options conditional on fabric safety.
- Air-dry, then inspect. Check the stain before tumble-drying. If it remains, repeat a compatible treatment if the product directions permit; avoid hot dryer heat while a visible mark remains, because heat may make some residual stains harder to remove.
Older stains or marks exposed to hot drying may not come out completely. Avoid escalating to a stronger product unless its label and the sheet’s care instructions permit it.
When should I use a different treatment?
Consider the stain’s appearance and timing before treating it. Yellow or brown discoloration is not always body soil. Whirlpool’s washer manual lists iron or manganese in water and chlorine staining among possible causes; mineral-related marks may appear after contact with water. These clues are not enough to identify the cause with certainty.

If the mark may be rust or mineral discoloration
Do not use chlorine bleach on a suspected rust stain. The American Cleaning Institute recommends a rust remover labeled for fabric and warns that sodium hypochlorite bleach may intensify rust discoloration. Follow the remover’s directions and check that it is suitable for the sheet. ACI stain-removal guidance covers this caution; Whirlpool’s washer troubleshooting manual lists iron or manganese in water as possible sources of brown or yellow marks.
If the sheet is not chlorine-bleach-safe
Use only an oxygen-bleach or color-safe product whose label says it is suitable for the fabric. Check whether the product calls for pretreatment or soaking; directions and contact times differ, so there is no single soak duration that applies to every sheet and product. If no compatible product is clear from the labels, wash with detergent at the permitted temperature instead of risking fabric damage.

How can I avoid setting the stain or damaging the sheets?
- Follow the sheet care label and the treatment product label; neither a white appearance nor a cotton feel alone establishes that chlorine bleach is safe.
- Do not assume that more detergent, dish soap, or bleach is better. Product-specific pretreatment advice is not a universal recipe, and misuse of bleach can leave permanent yellow marks.
- Do not tumble-dry a visible stain before checking the wash result. Air-drying makes it possible to inspect the fabric before more heat is applied.
- Do not use chlorine bleach on suspected rust discoloration; use a fabric-recommended rust treatment instead.
For general bodily-fluid stains, ACI also describes pretreatment or soaking with an enzyme-containing product, followed by laundering with sodium hypochlorite bleach if safe for the fabric or oxygen bleach. Use that approach only when the stain type and both product and sheet labels support it; it is not a substitute for the rust-stain branch.
