For most standard Samsung refrigerator shelves, hold the front, gently lift it, and slide it out. Support glass shelves with both hands, and do not force a shelf that resists: foldable shelves and assemblies above the crisper drawers can use different release steps. Check the manual for your refrigerator’s exact model if the hardware does not match.
Remove a standard refrigerator shelf
- Open the refrigerator door fully if the space allows.
- Hold the front of the shelf, gently lift it, and slide it out. This is Samsung’s general instruction for a standard shelf: Samsung Support: Removing and cleaning refrigerator shelves.
- Keep a secure hold on glass as you lift and carry it. Samsung cautions that tempered-glass shelves are heavy and can break, causing injury.
If the shelf does not move with a gentle lift and slide, stop rather than forcing it against the rear wall or side supports. Shelf and support designs vary; look up the instructions for the refrigerator’s full model number in its user manual.
Remove the glass shelf above the crisper drawers
This assembly may need extra clearance and may have release tabs, so it does not always come out like a standard shelf. Samsung’s guidance describes clearing obstructing lower door bins and crisper drawers first, then releasing tabs where present. Slightly lift the glass while pulling it away from the rear wall, and angle one side down to guide the assembly out. Place it on a clean, flat surface. The exact steps depend on the model; consult its manual if the tabs or shelf shape differ from these instructions. See Samsung’s shelf-removal guidance and the model-specific manual.
Clean the glass without damaging it
- Let a cold shelf warm to room temperature before washing. Samsung warns that warm or hot water on cold glass can cause it to shatter; use lukewarm water once the shelf has warmed.
- Some crisper-cover assemblies have retainer clips at the rear corners where glass meets the plastic frame. Other models do not have removable clips, and the glass is not designed to separate from the frame. Do not pry the glass out of a non-separable frame; Samsung warns this can physically damage the shelf.
- If debris remains trapped in a non-separable assembly, Samsung recommends soaking the whole assembly in a water-and-bleach solution. If it still cannot be cleaned adequately, replacement may be necessary. Check the refrigerator’s full model number and match the shelf position and configuration before selecting a replacement.
Samsung’s guidance covers multiple refrigerator designs, so the visible hardware and exact procedure can differ. For a foldable shelf, vegetable-cover shelf, or any shelf that will not release normally, use the instructions for the exact model rather than applying the standard lift-and-slide motion.

Reinstall the shelf
- Angle the shelf so its front is higher than the back.
- Insert the top hook into the matching upper notch.
- Lower the shelf and engage the bottom hook in the matching lower notch.
Check that the hooks and supports align before putting items back on the shelf. If it does not sit correctly, remove it and consult the model manual instead of forcing it into place. Samsung’s general removal and installation guidance is available at Samsung Support.
