The project adds a pulley to an existing extension ladder’s rope system so the ladder’s moving section takes less idealized pulling force in exchange for more rope travel. Schmidt reports that his own conversion worked well, but the article does not establish that the modification is compatible with or approved for every ladder.
How the double-pulley system works
A conventional rope-lift extension ladder uses a pulley at the top of its stationary section to redirect the rope. Schmidt’s project adds a second pulley near the bottom of the moving section and anchors one end of the rope near the top of the stationary section.
- Anchor one end of the rope near the top of the stationary ladder section.
- Run the rope down through the added pulley on the moving section.
- Bring it back up through the original pulley at the top of the stationary section.
- Pull the free end down to extend the moving section.
In the idealized explanation in Schmidt’s Make: project, published December 18, 2012, the arrangement requires twice as much rope travel while reducing the pulling force to half the moving section’s weight. That is a mechanical trade-off, not a guarantee of effortless operation: friction, pulley and rope condition, hardware, and installation all affect the effort required.
Parts and fit to check
Schmidt’s project lists an added pulley, rope approximately three times the ladder’s length, a metal strap, and mounting hardware: a bolt and nylock nut sized to fit the pulley ring, plus flat washers. He describes enlarging the strap holes for a 3/8-inch bolt and bending the strap around a rung. These are details of his build, not universal dimensions or instructions for every ladder.

- Pulley and mounting: Check that the pulley and its attachment suit the ladder’s construction and can be secured as intended.
- Rope: The approximately three-times-ladder-length figure is the project’s suggested length, not a tested specification for all ladders.
- Clearance: Confirm that the added pulley clears the other ladder section and the rungs throughout extension and retraction. A fit that works in one position may obstruct movement in another.
- Manufacturer guidance: The project does not establish manufacturer approval, compatibility, or certification. Consult the instructions for the specific ladder before considering any alteration.
What the project does—and does not—establish
Schmidt says he stood up his modified ladder, tested it, found extension “almost effortless,” and used it on numerous occasions. That is the author’s personal account. The project does not report a controlled performance test, independent safety review, or load test, and it does not show that the conversion is suitable for every ladder.
Adding moving hardware and changing a rope path can affect a ladder’s operation. Do not treat this DIY project as a safety improvement or a substitute for the ladder manufacturer’s instructions. If the ladder’s condition, construction, or hardware clearance makes the modification uncertain, do not proceed on the assumption that the illustrated arrangement will fit.

Safe ladder setup still matters
A pulley conversion does not replace sound ladder setup or safe use. OSHA’s requirements below apply to workplace use; they are not universal consumer-product specifications. See 29 CFR 1926.1053 and OSHA’s Portable Ladder Safety QuickCard.
- For workplace use, set a non-self-supporting portable ladder so the horizontal distance from its top support to its foot is approximately one-quarter of its working length—the distance along the ladder from foot to top support.
- Use a stable, level surface unless the ladder is secured against displacement, and make sure extension locks are engaged.
- Do not exceed the ladder’s rated capacity or use it for a purpose other than its design. Account for the total supported weight, including tools and equipment.
- For workplace access to an upper landing, the side rails generally must extend at least 3 feet above the landing. OSHA specifies an alternative involving securing the ladder at the top and providing a grasping device when its length prevents that extension.
Modify or use another ladder?
The project describes a way to change the rope path on an existing ladder; it does not compare the modification with replacement ladders or establish savings in cost or time. Before deciding, assess the ladder’s condition, the working height needed, its rated load, clearance for added hardware, and the manufacturer’s guidance. If the ladder cannot be used as intended or the fit is uncertain, do not rely on the conversion to resolve that problem.
