Stephen Dawson’s warning about a potentially long Western Australian bushfire season was made in October 2024, not as a forecast for 2026. His practical message still matters: make a plan before a fire threatens, prepare what you would take, and follow current official warnings and advice.
What Dawson warned about in October 2024
On 15 October 2024, Western Australian Emergency Services Minister Stephen Dawson urged residents to prepare a bushfire plan using the My Bushfire App. He said people should decide in advance what to do if fire threatens their home, how to leave safely and what to take. His appeal was to spend 15 minutes making a plan.
PerthNow reported that Dawson said 93% of Western Australia was bushfire-prone and about 2% of households had a bushfire plan. Those were figures attributed to Dawson in 2024; the underlying survey or methodology was not established in the report. They should not be treated as verified current statistics.
The report described a low-rainfall outlook for the 2024 season. DFES Commissioner Darren Klemm said the season was expected to begin that month and that dry winter conditions could make it longer. The article also reported that 28 homes had been destroyed in the preceding fire season, including 18 residences in the City of Wanneroo in November, and that the Government had announced $10 million for two Black Hawk helicopters. These are historical details from the 2024 report, not a current forecast or assessment.

How to make a bushfire plan now
DFES’s current advice is to prepare for the decisions you may face: leaving, or staying and defending only if you can do so safely. Use the Emergency WA planning tool to create, save, print, share and update an emergency plan.
- Decide what will trigger your departure. Choose in advance when you will leave and where you will go. DFES says evacuation is the best option if you do not know that you can safely manage a life-threatening situation and protect your family.
- Plan how you will leave. Identify a safe destination and how household members will get there. Include arrangements for children, anyone needing assistance, and pets.
- Work out what you will take. Prepare an evacuation kit before the season, and make a list of essentials such as medications, phones, chargers and keys that you may need to grab.
- Share and revisit the plan. Make sure everyone in the household knows what to do. Update the plan when contact details, household needs or circumstances change.
- Check conditions and official advice. Check Fire Danger Ratings daily and monitor official warnings through Emergency WA.
What to put in emergency kits
DFES distinguishes between an evacuation kit and a staying-in-place kit. The latter is for a last-option situation when other plans fail or leaving is not possible; it should not replace a safe departure plan.

| Kit | DFES checklist items |
|---|---|
| Evacuation kit | Important documents and valuables; clothing; a first aid kit; drinking water and food for the trip; hygiene items; medications; phone and chargers; keys; and pet supplies. |
| Staying-in-place kit | At least five days of provisions; a first aid and trauma kit; important documents; a waterproof torch; battery-powered lights; a battery-operated AM/FM radio; emergency contacts; head protection and goggles; smoke and particle masks; and protective clothing. |
These are DFES checklist items, not a requirement to buy a particular brand or model. For a radio on the staying-in-place list, the relevant feature is battery operation and AM/FM reception; choose equipment the household can use during a power outage.

In the 2024 report, Commissioner Darren Klemm urged residents to clean up around their homes and clear leaves from gutters. He also said people should undertake preparedness activities early. Treat that as useful property-maintenance advice, while relying on current DFES guidance for today’s conditions and warnings.
