Elon Musk described his primary home in Boca Chica/Starbase as a roughly $50,000 house he rented from SpaceX in 2021. That does not establish a current price, a verified house tour, or that he lived there with 12 children. Later reporting distinguishes that rental from a nearby Boxabl prefab he bought as a guest house.
What Musk said about the Boca Chica house
On June 9, 2021, Musk wrote: “My primary home is literally a ~$50k house in Boca Chica / Starbase that I rent from SpaceX.” He added, “It’s kinda awesome though.” Euronews reproduced the post in its August 12, 2021 report. The statement establishes what he said at that time; it is not evidence that the rental arrangement or his residence has remained unchanged. Euronews, August 12, 2021
The approximately $50,000 figure was Musk’s rough historical description, not a current asking price or a verified market valuation. It also does not mean the home was available for less than €50,000: euro figures attached to the claim were contemporaneous currency conversions, not a euro-denominated listing.
Is the rental the same house as a Boxabl Casita?
The reporting does not establish that they are the same property. Euronews said Boxabl had installed a prefab home in Boca Chica in November 2020 for an unnamed “top secret customer.” It reported a possible connection to Musk, but did not demonstrate that this was the SpaceX rental he described. Euronews, August 12, 2021

A June 12, 2026 Fortune report makes the distinction explicit: it describes the Boca Chica home as rented from SpaceX and separately reports that Musk bought a Boxabl prefab used as a nearby guest house. On the available evidence, those should be treated as two dwellings, not one confirmed house. Fortune also quoted Musk’s mother, Maye Musk, recalling a visit in a March 2026 social post: “There is no food in the fridge.” She also described the garage where she slept and a shower with one towel; those are her recollections as quoted by Fortune, not an independently verified tour. Fortune, June 12, 2026
| Dwelling | What reporting says | What is established |
|---|---|---|
| Boca Chica/Starbase house | Musk described it in 2021 as his primary home, roughly $50,000, rented from SpaceX. | His historical statement is reported; current price and ongoing residence are not established. Euronews, 2021 |
| Nearby Boxabl prefab | Fortune reported in 2026 that Musk bought it and used it as a guest house. | It is described separately from the SpaceX rental. Earlier reporting did not prove the Boxabl installation was that rental. Fortune, 2026 |
What a Boxabl Casita is—and what its specifications do not prove
In a 2023 SEC-filed offering document, Boxabl described its Casita as a “19′ x 19′ pre-fab studio apartment” that unfolds from shipping-container size. The company says it is factory-finished with a kitchen, bathroom, electrical components and HVAC. These are Boxabl’s product descriptions, not independent verification of construction performance or a specification for Musk’s rented house. Boxabl offering material filed with the SEC, 2023
The same filing uses company-reported testing language for performance claims. It does not establish an independently validated durability or energy-efficiency result, nor does it provide a verified current retail quote. It also does not establish current availability, delivery charges, permitting requirements, site work, utility connections or total installed cost.

The reviewed reporting does not support that claim. Architectural Digest España reported that Musk had 13 children in an article published February 18, 2025, but it did not say they lived with him in the Boca Chica home. A reported family count cannot establish who shared a household, and the 2025 figure should not be presented as a verified current count for 2026. Architectural Digest España, February 18, 2025
