Elon Musk did say in 2021 that his primary home was a roughly $50,000 house he rented from SpaceX. He did not name its manufacturer. BOXABL’s founder was asked about the rumor that Musk lived in a Boxabl Casita and declined to confirm it. The “$50K box” headline therefore joins an unconfirmed connection to a historical price—not a verified Musk-branded home or a current turnkey price.
Did Elon Musk live in a $50,000 Boxabl house?
The available record supports a narrower claim: on June 9, 2021, Musk wrote, “My primary home is literally a ~$50k house in Boca Chica / Starbase that I rent from SpaceX.” The statement, reproduced in BOXABL’s SEC-filed materials, does not identify the home’s maker. BOXABL’s SEC-filed material
In a 2021 interview transcript filed with the SEC, BOXABL founder Galiano Tiramani was asked whether Musk lived in a Boxabl. He replied, “that’s the rumor that’s there i cannot i cannot comment sorry you can’t comment.” That is not confirmation. The interview is useful evidence of what the founder said, but it does not independently establish which house Musk occupied. SEC-filed interview transcript
What did the original $50,000 figure cover?
BOXABL’s early Casita materials described a 375-square-foot accessory dwelling unit and presented an expected price around $50,000. That was a historical estimate for the unit, not an all-in price for a completed home on a buyer’s property. The interview transcript says land and site work were outside the figure; possible costs included a foundation, utility connections, permits, landscaping and other preparation. Installation costs could vary by site. SEC-filed BOXABL materials

BOXABL says turnkey pricing bundles the base unit, financing and on-site installation, is subject to individual site conditions, and is offered in approved states. The same page says previously disclosed non-turnkey base-unit pricing starts at approximately $60,000 for buyers arranging their own site work and installation. That base figure should not be compared with the turnkey prices as if both covered the same scope. BOXABL investor/product page
What kind of home is the Casita?
BOXABL describes the Casita as a compact factory-built home or accessory dwelling unit. Its current product page gives a broader product-family range of 400–2,400 square feet, studio to four-bedroom plans, and one to 3.5 bathrooms, with steel construction and kitchen, living and full-bath interiors. Those family-wide specifications should not be confused with the older 375-square-foot Casita description or its historically cited 20-by-20-foot studio footprint. Is this a new Tesla or Elon Musk home launch?
The $50,000 statement does not announce a Tesla product. Tesla’s 2017 Tiny House was a solar-technology demonstration model, not a house Tesla sold. PolitiFact’s November 8, 2024 fact-check found no evidence supporting social-media claims that Musk was launching affordable homes; that assessment addresses those claims at the time, not every possible future announcement.
