For a cheerful Easter gift that lasts beyond a single day, arrange compact potted spring flowers in a basket or decorative cachepot. Mini daffodils or hyacinths make an upright focal point; violas, pansies, alyssum and foliage fill the lower edge. Keep each plant in a pot that drains, and use the basket as an outer holder—not as a container that traps water.
Which flowers work well in an Easter basket?
A mixed planting looks full without relying on cut flowers. A florist’s basket example combines mini daffodils, hyacinths, violas, alyssum and assorted foliage in basket-style containers; exact seasonal offerings vary by retailer and location. See the florist basket example.

How to assemble the basket without water damage
- Choose an outer holder. Use a woven basket or decorative cachepot large enough to hold the nursery pots upright.
- Arrange plants by height. Place mini daffodils or hyacinths as the taller focal points, then position violas or pansies around them. Tuck alyssum or foliage along the edge to soften gaps.
- Keep the pots removable. Leave plants in their draining nursery pots. If you add a watertight liner for carrying or presentation, remove it before watering.
- Protect the surface beneath the gift. A saucer or drip tray is optional; the key is to let water drain freely and empty anything collected in the outer holder.
Decorative covers can hide standing water, so take them off when watering and never let the plant sit in water. Iowa State Extension’s gift-plant guidance and forced-bulb care guidance explain the drainage precautions.
Choose blooms at different stages
For a display that develops over time, look for plants with a mix of open flowers and developed buds that have not opened yet. Iowa State Extension recommends that stage for forced spring bulbs. Care instructions for the recipient
Forced daffodils and hyacinths
- Place the pots in bright, indirect light in a relatively cool room. Iowa State Extension gives 60 to 65°F as the preferred range for forced spring bulbs. Iowa State Extension
- Turn the pots periodically if flower stalks lean toward the window.
- Check the soil surface and water when it feels dry. Water thoroughly, allow excess to drain through the pot, and empty the outer cover.
- Remove spent flowers when they fade. Do not expect every forced bulb to bloom again.
Easter lilies
- Provide bright light out of direct sun, daytime temperatures of 65 to 70°F, and slightly cooler nights.

What to do after the flowers fade
Aftercare depends on the plant. Iowa State Extension says tulips, hyacinths and most other forced spring bulbs are usually discarded after forcing. Daffodils are a better candidate for outdoor planting; many cultivars can perform well in the garden. Iowa State Extension. Easter lilies may be planted outdoors after frost risk has passed, but success depends on local climate and growing conditions. Iowa State Extension.
