- Finished dimensions and the space needed for installation.
- Material quantities, board sizes, and cut dimensions.
- Joinery, fasteners, mounting method, and any required hardware.
- Build difficulty and any tools or skills the plan assumes.
Do not treat generic lumber, fasteners, drill bits, or mounting hardware as specified components unless the plan calls for them.
Fit a rack to your tools and shop
A rack that works well for one turning-tool collection may not suit another. Before choosing a layout, account for tool lengths and handle diameters, how the rack retains tools while allowing them to be lifted out, support for handles, and protection for cutting edges. Also consider whether the location allows access without reaching across the lathe while it is running, and whether a wall-mounted or floor-standing unit fits your shop and cleanup routine.

One maker’s wall-mounted adaptation
A separate Craftisian project describes a maple rack about 11 by 25 inches and 3 inches deep, with divided openings and an angled lower board. Its maker said the angled bottom kept the rack shallow and helped it stay clean, while gravity held the tools in place but allowed them to lift out. The rack was positioned beside the lathe rather than where the user would need to reach across it while running. Storage options vary in retention, footprint, mobility, and how well they fit a particular collection. - Tool fit: Check that openings and supports accommodate the lengths and handle sizes in your collection.
- Edge protection: Arrange tools so cutting edges are not left exposed to casual contact.
- Access: Choose a position that does not require reaching over a running lathe.
- Space and cleanup: Compare wall and floor footprint, mobility or stowability, and whether the design is likely to collect shavings.
