The easiest reliable way to install a floating shelf is to locate the studs, level and fasten the shelf’s bracket with hardware specified for your wall and shelf, then slide the shelf onto the bracket and secure it as directed. The exact fasteners, bracket count and load limit vary by product and wall type, so use the instructions supplied with your shelf.
Gather the tools and check the shelf instructions
Set out a stud finder, level, tape measure, pencil, drill, screwdriver and safety glasses. Depending on the wall and supplied hardware, you may also need a hammer or a masonry bit. Check that the bracket and fasteners are included and identify the shelf’s mounting requirements before drilling. The Home Depot’s floating-shelf installation guide covers common tools and locating studs; the manufacturer’s instructions distinguish among stud, hollow-drywall and solid-masonry installations.
Install the shelf, step by step

Choose and mark the location
Mark where you want the shelf to sit, taking its length and the position of nearby objects into account. Use a stud finder to locate and mark the studs behind the wall. If you are installing more than one shelf, measure from the first bracket and mark the others consistently.

Match the mounting method to the wall
Check the shelf instructions for the required bracket, fasteners and wall-specific method. A stud installation, hollow-drywall installation and masonry installation may require different hardware. Do not assume a general-purpose anchor is suitable for every shelf or wall. Some instructions recommend a small pilot hole to make fastening into a stud easier; use the specified bit and hole size for your product.

Position, level and fasten the bracket
Hold the bracket at the marked location and check it with a level. Mark the mounting holes, then fasten the bracket using the product’s instructions and the hardware appropriate to the wall. When possible, secure at least one mounting screw into a stud, as The Home Depot recommends. Follow any stricter product-specific requirements: for example, REHAU’s floating-shelf instructions require its brackets to be centered over studs and specify two screws per bracket into studs. That requirement applies to the REHAU system, not all floating shelves.

Fit and secure the shelf
Slide the shelf onto the mounted bracket. Install the locking screws or other supplied fasteners in the locations and quantities specified by the manufacturer. Do not omit a required bracket or fastener.

Check the load limit before putting items on the shelf
There is no single weight limit for floating shelves: capacity depends on the shelf system, wall and installation conditions. Use the rating stated for your specific model and the mounting method it requires. For example, Knape & Vogt’s 2015 instructions rate its model 0140-2X10BK at 30 lb per shelf when mounted onto studs; that figure is specific to that model and condition, not a general limit for floating shelves. Knape & Vogt model instructions and the instructions for your own shelf are the relevant references. REHAU also warns that a bracket not centered over a stud may not fasten securely and the shelf could collapse under load; its system sets a minimum bracket count according to shelf length.
