In the limited hands-on evidence available, yes: the Dyson V16 Piston Animal’s dual-conical brush head avoided visible hair wrap in one reviewer’s tests with their own hair and a Cocker Spaniel’s hair. That is encouraging for people with long hair or pets, but it is not proof the head will never tangle in every home—or that it beats all competing vacuums. Dyson’s own test is narrower still: hair up to 25 inches long, using the main cleaner head in Boost mode.
How the V16 is meant to prevent hair wrap
The V16 Piston Animal’s All Floor Cones Sense head uses two conical brush bars. Dyson says the shape moves hair from the wider middle toward the narrower ends, where it can be drawn into the bin. In Auto mode, Dyson also says the vacuum adjusts suction and brush-bar speed to the floor type. Its CleanCompaktor bin compresses debris, but that feature does not establish how well the head handles hair.

What Dyson’s long-hair claim covers
Dyson says it tested the anti-tangle design with hair up to 25 inches (63.5 cm) long, using the main cleaner head in Boost mode. That figure describes a test condition, not a percentage of users or a guarantee that hair of that length will never wrap. Dyson also states a motor suction figure of 315 air watts, measured at the inlet in Boost mode under ASTM F558-21; it is not a hair-wrap result.

What independent reviewers observed
TechRadar said it tested the V16 for three weeks and reported no hair wrapped around the conical rollers in tests with the reviewer’s own hair and their Cocker Spaniel’s hair. The reviewer also questioned the floorhead’s overall design. Importantly, they said their earlier Gen5detect and V15 had also avoided wrapping with their own hair length, so the observation does not establish that the new head is a material improvement for every user. Tom’s Guide’s July 5, 2026 review described the vacuum as capable across messes, while flagging a dust cloud when releasing the bin. Does it make sense for pets or long hair?
The V16 is a plausible option if hair regularly collects around your current vacuum’s brush: its design targets that problem, and the reported hands-on results are positive for both human and dog hair. The evidence is not broad enough to promise a tangle-free experience for every hair type, floor, or cleaning routine. No standardized independent comparative hair-wrap rate is established in the cited reviews.
- For long hair: Dyson’s stated test reached 25 inches, but under the specific Boost-mode and main-head conditions above.
- For pet hair: one reviewer reported no wrap with their Cocker Spaniel’s hair. “Animal” in the model name is not proof it wins every pet-hair scenario.
- For dust-sensitive households: account for the reported dust cloud during bin release and consider how you will empty it.
When comparing vacuums, look for tests using similar hair length and floor surfaces, and check both how much hair remains on the brush after cleaning and how easy the head is to clear. Runtime, included tools, and storage also matter, but comparisons are meaningful only when tested under comparable conditions.

What the evidence does—and does not—show
James Dyson, the company’s founder and chief engineer, described the dual-conical head in the launch announcement as one that “detangles even the longest hair.” That is Dyson’s characterization of the design, not an independent test conclusion. The published evidence supports a more measured takeaway: one reviewer saw no wrap in their own hair and dog-hair tests, while Dyson’s own claim is tied to a defined test setup. Neither establishes a universal result or a head-to-head advantage over every alternative.
