In the V15s Detect Submarine system, it washes hard floors while collecting dirty water and small debris in a separate tank; separate heads handle ordinary dry vacuuming, including carpet cleaning.
What the Dyson Submarine head does
The Submarine head uses a motorized microfiber roller and clean water. Dyson says eight hydration points distribute water across the roller, while an extraction plate removes dirty water and small debris into a separate dirty-water tank. These are Dyson’s descriptions of the design, not independent performance-test results. Dyson’s product guide explains the system.
Dyson lists tile, stone, sealed wood, ceramic, vinyl, linoleum and laminate as compatible floor types. Check the flooring manufacturer’s care instructions before using water, especially on sealed wood or other moisture-sensitive surfaces.
What it can clean—and what it cannot
Dyson presents the wet roller for hard-floor spills and stains, including food and liquid messes. Only the Submarine head should pick up wet debris or liquid spills. Keep liquids out of the ordinary vacuum bin and do not use other heads for wet cleaning. Dyson also cautions against using domestic wet-and-dry vacuum cleaners on plaster dust, floodwater or fireplace debris.

Does it work on carpets?
No. Dyson says the Submarine wet roller is engineered for hard floors, not carpets. The V15s Detect Submarine can still vacuum carpets with its separate dry-cleaning head; that is a different function from washing floors with the Submarine roller. Dyson’s guide describes the separate heads.
Can I use the wet roller head with my existing Dyson V15?
Do not assume so. Dyson says the Submarine wet roller head is not compatible with its other vacuums, including a V15 purchased previously. The V15s Submarine system was reprogrammed to detect wet-cleaning mode, and Dyson says earlier software is not compatible with wet floor cleaning. Dyson also says the complete wet roller head is not sold separately as an accessory. Check the exact model designation and included heads before buying; “Dyson V15” alone is not enough to establish compatibility. Dyson’s product FAQ gives the compatibility explanation.

Is the V15s Detect Submarine the right kind of cleaner?
It combines dry vacuuming for mixed surfaces with wet cleaning for hard floors. Dyson positions the WashG1 instead as a dedicated wet cleaner for homes focused on hard floors. The practical choice depends on whether you need carpet vacuuming in the same machine, how often you clean wet spills, and how you feel about handling and maintaining a dirty-water tank.
TechRadar’s 2026 Dyson guide names the V15s its best Dyson wet-and-dry option, while noting that it can leave streaks if paused and that its dirty-water tank can leak. How to clean and maintain the roller
Dyson recommends washing the wet roller after each clean and replacing it every six months, depending on use. The replacement interval is manufacturer guidance, not a guaranteed lifespan.
- If using detergent, choose a gentle common household detergent and follow its recommended dilution.
- Do not use bleach or put undiluted detergent in the clean-water tank.
- Check the exact replacement roller part number and model compatibility before ordering. The complete head not being sold separately does not, by itself, establish whether a replacement roller component is available.
