On many Samsung front-load washers, the pump filter sits behind a lower access panel. To remove it safely, first drain leftover water through the small emergency hose, then turn the filter counterclockwise. The exact layout varies by model and market, so check your washer’s user manual if its panel, hose, or filter does not match these steps.
First, identify the filter and your washer type
“Washer filter” does not describe one universal Samsung component. Samsung US says its pump-filter cleaning instructions apply to front-load models; top-load washers may not have this pump filter. Samsung Australia uses the term “lint filter” for the pump, debris, or drain filter on Australian front-load washers and washer/dryer combos. Samsung Laundry Combo models may have a separate drain-filter procedure. Use the manual for your exact model rather than relying on an illustration for a different washer.
Find the model number on the washer and look up its user manual. Samsung Canada notes that the filter’s location and removal can vary. If you cannot identify the filter or the parts do not match the manual, stop rather than forcing a cover or knob.
What to prepare before opening the filter
- Turn the washer off; Samsung Australia also advises unplugging it.
- Place a towel and shallow container beneath the access panel to catch residual water.
- If the washer has just run a hot Self Clean, Pure Cycle, or Sanitize cycle, wait one hour for the water to cool. Samsung warns that the water may be hot enough to cause injury.
How to remove and clean a front-load pump filter
- Open the access panel. On many US front-load models, it is near the bottom front and opens when you press the cover. Follow your manual if your panel releases differently.
- Drain the remaining water. Pull out the emergency drain hose and hold its end over the container. Remove the hose cap and let the water drain. The cap may be tight because it seals the hose.
- Remove the filter. Once the water has drained, turn the pump filter counterclockwise. Some models have a cap-like safety knob that must be pushed in while turning. Use the method shown in your manual; do not force a filter that will not turn.
- Clean the filter and check the pump opening. Rinse away debris and use a small soft-bristle brush, such as a toothbrush, to clean the filter. Check the drain-pump impeller in the housing for debris.
- Reinstall the parts. Turn the filter clockwise until secure. Samsung US describes securing it in the vertical position for the models covered by its instructions. Firmly replace the emergency-hose cap, return the hose to its holder, and close the access panel.
How often should you clean it?
Samsung’s recommended interval depends on the product and region. The figures below are maintenance recommendations from Samsung, not results of an independent study.
