- Establish a baseline. Save bills and record usage before installing a device. Note the billing dates, rate, weather, household occupancy and major appliance use.
- Check the utility’s data. DOE’s Green Button program provides access to energy-use data where a utility supports it. Data granularity varies by utility; available interval data may show hourly or 15-minute consumption and monthly peaks. DOE Green Button information
- Compare equivalent periods. Compare usage and costs across periods with similar conditions, and account for changes in weather, occupancy, rates or appliance use. A single lower bill does not establish causation.
- Separate measurement from control. A plug-in electricity usage monitor can help measure an individual appliance. It does not control the load or demonstrate whole-home savings. Utility interval data provides a broader view, but changes still need to be interpreted in context.
