Its picks can help you compare features; before buying, confirm the exact model, current energy label, installation requirements and local availability.

The roundup covered two different dryer types and assigned each model a category or household-use label. Those labels describe the article’s editorial picks, not universal winners. Its prices were Australian-dollar starting prices reported on 3 October 2024; they should not be treated as current offers. The article describes a selection process that considered customer feedback, consulted product users and sometimes included hands-on testing, but does not establish that every model was tested hands-on.

Seven heat-pump dryers in the roundup
Heat-pump dryers recirculate heat and collect or drain condensed water, so they do not need outdoor venting. Efficient heat-pump models can use substantially less energy than conventional dryers, but actual consumption depends on the model and use. The Australian Government Energy Rating page states that “an efficient heat pump dryer uses 60% less energy than a conventional dryer”; the page does not state a year for that figure. See the government guidance and compare labels for similar-capacity models rather than assuming every heat-pump dryer will save exactly that amount.

Choose the dryer type for the room and installation
When a vented dryer may suit
A vented unit can be a practical choice where there is a safe, manufacturer-approved route to discharge humid air outdoors. Plan the exhaust path before purchase: a dryer that cannot be vented as required may create moisture problems in the laundry or building. Check the installation manual for vent position, hose requirements, clearances and whether the proposed location is allowed.

When a heat-pump dryer may suit
A heat-pump dryer avoids an outdoor exhaust route by condensing moisture into a tank or drain. That can make it easier to place in some homes, but it still needs the clearances and service access specified by its manufacturer. Check whether the model requires manual tank emptying, offers drainage, and has accessible filters or heat-exchanger maintenance.
Compare energy labels, not star counts in isolation
Australian Energy Rating guidance recommends comparing dryers of similar capacity. The energy label gives a star rating, estimated annual energy consumption and program time. A higher star count is not, by itself, a like-for-like comparison when capacities differ. What capacity should you choose?
The roundup offers a rule of thumb: up to 6 kg for singles or couples, up to 8 kg for households of four or fewer, and 9 kg or more for larger households. Treat this as a starting point, not a sizing formula. The government notes that larger machines usually use more electricity; match capacity to the loads you actually dry and check that the drum can handle bulky items you use regularly.

Drying time varies with the program, fabric, load size, spin-dry performance of the washer, and the dryer’s sensors and settings. The roundup’s one-hour Beko hybrid claim refers to a 5 kg load, while Samsung’s 35-minute figure is for a small-load program; neither is a general cycle-time guarantee. The current energy label’s program-time information can help compare similar models, but real loads may take longer or shorter.

What does a dryer cost to run?
There is no single running-cost figure established for these 14 picks. A useful estimate needs the exact model’s energy-label consumption, your electricity tariff and how often you run it. For a rough annual estimate, multiply the label’s estimated annual kWh by your electricity price per kWh, while recognising that your load mix and usage may differ from the label’s assumptions. Compare both purchase price and likely running cost rather than choosing by upfront price alone.
Check the installation before ordering
Dryers are bulky appliances, so treat the installation like a fit-out measurement rather than relying on a nominal capacity or product photo. Measure the cavity and access route, including door swing and any adjacent cabinetry. Then check the exact manual for required ventilation, power supply, drainage, clearances and mounting or stacking instructions.

- Measure appliance width, height and depth, plus delivery access and room to open the door.
- For vented models, confirm a permitted outdoor exhaust route; for heat-pump models, check tank access or drain connection and service clearance.
- Verify wall-mount brackets or stacking kits are approved for the exact dryer and compatible washer; account for any separately sold kit.
- Confirm the door orientation, control-panel access, noise expectations and placement conditions for the particular model.
Filter care and safe operation
Clean the lint filter after every cycle. Australian Government guidance warns that blocked filters reduce airflow, increase energy use and create a fire hazard; see its dryer-care guidance. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for cleaning the exhaust path, heat exchanger and any other filters, and for emptying or draining collected water. Do not assume a self-cleaning feature removes every maintenance task.
