How to Drill Shelf-Pin Holes for Adjustable Shelves

Drill aligned shelf-pin holes by matching the bit to the supports, clamping a jig, controlling depth, and indexing each new setup from an existing hole.

To drill shelf-pin holes that line up, first match the bit to the pins you will use, then guide the drill with a clamped shelf-pin jig and a depth stop. Keep both cabinet-side rows referenced to the same height, and test the fit on scrap before drilling the cabinet. Hole diameter, spacing, and inset depend on your hardware and cabinet—not one universal standard.

Choose the hole size and pattern before drilling

Use the diameter required by the shelf supports. If you are adding to existing rows, measure their hole diameter and center-to-center spacing first so the new holes accept the same pins and continue the pattern. Do not choose a bit just because a size is commonly sold as a shelf-pin size.

Kreg’s KMA3232 jig is a 5 mm system: its product listing specifies six guides spaced 1-1/4 inches (32 mm) apart and includes a 5 mm brad-point bit, stop collar, indexing pin, and four 5 mm shelf pins (Kreg KMA3232 product listing). Lee Valley’s Kreg listing describes a choice of 5 mm or 1/4-inch bit; verify the exact variant before buying (Lee Valley Kreg listing). The 32 mm pattern is specific to that jig, not a rule for every cabinet or pin system.

Decide where the rows will sit on the cabinet sides. There is no universal front or back inset established for all cabinets. Keep the row clear of the back and front edges, and place it so the shelf will be supported near its corners. Mark the intended range of shelf heights before setting up the jig.

Set up the jig and make a test hole

  1. Establish a consistent reference. Choose the same cabinet edge or layout mark as the datum for each side panel. Use a square or the jig’s fence to position the row consistently; do not rely on visual alignment.
  2. Set the hole depth. Fit the depth stop as directed by the jig manufacturer. Kreg’s manual instructs: “Position the jig on your workpiece, clamp it in place and drill, stopping when the stop collar contacts the drill guide” (Kreg shelf-pin jig manual). This controls depth; it does not establish a universal hole depth for every pin and panel.
  3. Clamp the jig and keep the drill square. A guide bushing constrains the bit’s path and helps make holes consistently located and perpendicular. Secure the jig before drilling so it cannot shift.
  4. Test on scrap. Use a scrap piece of the same material and thickness. Check that the pin seats securely and that the hole does not break through a visible face or cause splitting. Adjust the stop if needed before drilling the cabinet.

Drill and extend the row without drifting

  1. With the jig clamped at the first position, drill the planned holes using the stop collar as directed.
  2. To continue beyond the jig’s guide positions, use its locating or indexing pin in a hole already drilled. Re-clamp the jig in that referenced position before drilling the next set. Moving the jig by eye can make the spacing drift; Kreg’s manual describes indexing to extend the row.
  3. Repeat along the marked shelf-height range. Keep the jig referenced to the same panel edge or datum so the row remains straight.
  4. For the opposite cabinet side, transfer the same starting height and reference. An evenly spaced row on each side can still be misaligned with the other if the starting points differ. The Kreg manual describes using a spacer to help align holes at shelf corners.

Check the shelf before loading it

Install matching supports in corresponding holes and set the shelf in place. Confirm that all pins are fully seated, the shelf is level, and it does not rock or wobble. Correct alignment or fit problems before loading the shelf. Hole diameter alone does not establish a safe load capacity: the pins, shelf, panel material, and installation all matter, and the cited product sources do not give a general rating for arbitrary combinations.

Kreg KMA3232 5 mm jig 5 mm guides; six positions at 1-1/4 inches (32 mm) increments per setup, according to Kreg’s product listing Includes an indexing pin; use it to continue a row and establish matching rows from a common reference Adding or extending a compatible 5 mm pattern
Kreg jig listing at Lee Valley Listing describes 5 mm or 1/4-inch bit options and six bushings at 32 mm spacing; check the selected variant Listing describes a locating pin for continuing an existing row When the existing pins or holes call for one of the listed sizes
Veritas Shelf-Drilling Jig Multiple hardened bushing diameters; rails have holes at 1-inch intervals, according to Lee Valley’s listing Includes register pins and 24-inch rails Repeated work across uprights or jobs using multiple support sizes
Manual layout with a ruler, square, and drill guide Set spacing to match the chosen supports and existing pattern Requires careful repeated referencing; the cited sources do not compare its accuracy with jigs A small one-off job where careful layout is practical

Avoid common drilling mistakes

  • Wrong bit size: Match the bit to the pins, and measure existing holes if extending a row.
  • Drifting spacing: Engage the locating pin in a previously drilled hole rather than repositioning by eye.
  • Rows that do not face each other: Transfer the same datum and verify the paired rows before installing supports.
  • Overdrilling: Set and use the depth stop, then confirm the depth on scrap before drilling a finished panel.
  • Assuming a load rating: Do not infer capacity from hole size; evaluate the full shelf-and-support assembly.

Wear eye protection and follow the drill manufacturer’s safety instructions. Kreg’s manual also directs users to follow those safety guidelines.
