No—lime is not a supported mole repellent. Lime is a soil amendment used to raise pH when a soil test shows lawn soil is too acidic. Extension sources do not recommend it for mole control, and that is different from proving it can never affect moles. If you need to control active mole damage, a mole-specific trap set in an active tunnel is the most dependable general option identified by UC IPM.
Why lime is not a mole treatment
Lime changes soil chemistry; it does not target the cause of mole activity. Moles tunnel in search of earthworms, grubs and other soil invertebrates. No cited extension guidance recommends lime to repel or control them. Use lime only when a soil test indicates a pH adjustment is needed.
For lawn care, University of Maryland Extension advises testing soil before liming. Its guidance gives a pH range of 6.0–6.8 as optimal for many turf situations, though the appropriate target depends on grass species. Calcitic lime supplies calcium carbonate; dolomitic lime also supplies magnesium. A laboratory test should determine whether lime is needed and the application rate for the tested soil and lawn area. A recommended application may take up to six months to measurably change pH. Hydrated lime and burned or quick lime are caustic and should not be used on lawns. University of Maryland Extension’s established-lawn guidance explains the soil-testing and lime considerations.
Confirm that moles are causing the damage
Moles are mammals that live mostly underground and feed on invertebrates. Shallow raised ridges and soil mounds are common signs of their tunneling. They do not typically chew plant roots or stems; voles and other rodents are more likely to be responsible for that kind of damage. Activity can be seasonal, and some lawns may not need control.

For eastern moles, University of Maryland Extension says they can consume 70 to 100 percent of their body weight in insects—mostly grubs and worms—each day. That figure describes eastern moles, not every mole species. Maryland Extension’s mole guide covers their feeding and lawn damage.
Compare practical mole-control options
| Option | What the extension guidance says | Best fit or limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Mole-specific trap | UC IPM calls trapping the most universally applicable and dependable method. | For active tunnels where removal is the goal. Set the trap as its manufacturer directs; a mole may take days to encounter it. |
| Castor-oil repellent | UC IPM reports some efficacy for eastern moles, but says published efficacy research for western U.S. moles is absent. Florida IFAS notes persistence depends on soil and rainfall. | Evidence varies by species and conditions; displaced moles may move into neighboring yards. |
| Vibration or sound devices, mothballs and home remedies | UC IPM and Florida IFAS say these approaches are not supported by scientific trials or have not proved successful. | Do not rely on them as established control methods. |
| Grub treatment | Maryland Extension says grub-control products will not eliminate moles, which also eat earthworms and other soil insects. | Treat identified turf pests for the turf problem, not as a guaranteed mole remedy. |
| Wire barriers | Extension sources describe barriers as potentially useful, but difficult or impractical for whole lawns and sometimes circumvented. | More practical for protecting a small bed or planted area. |
Sources: UC IPM’s mole guidance, Ask Extension’s Oklahoma response on moles, and Florida IFAS’s mole guide. The Oklahoma Ask Extension response states, “There are no known effective repellents for moles.” UC IPM’s narrower finding on castor-oil products differs, so repellent claims should be understood in light of species and location.

How to proceed if moles are damaging the lawn
- Identify active tunnels. Look for fresh ridges or mounds rather than treating the entire lawn based on old signs.
- Decide whether control is necessary. If damage is minor or activity appears temporary, monitoring may be reasonable.
- If removal is needed, use a mole-specific trap. Choose a trap designed for moles and place it in an active tunnel according to its instructions. Multiple active sections may improve the chance of success; allow time for a mole to encounter the trap.
- Check local rules before hiring help or using pesticides. Requirements vary by jurisdiction. Florida IFAS describes Florida-specific certification and product-registration requirements; elsewhere, consult local extension guidance and follow pesticide labels.
UC IPM’s recommendation is based on trapping’s broad applicability and dependability, not a claim that every trap placement succeeds. Its detailed mole guidance explains tunnel identification, trapping, exclusion and the limitations of repellents and other methods.
