For an end hole or a dowel joint between boards, use a fixture suited to that task: these setups solve different alignment problems.
Choose a setup for the hole you need
A dowel can roll, while a drill bit can wander on its curved surface. A reliable setup restrains the workpiece and physically guides the bit; steadying the dowel by hand does not do both. WOOD Magazine recommends a shop-made guide block for a cross-hole, and describes separate fixtures for drilling into a dowel end or through a short dowel on a drill press.

Drill a cross-hole through a dowel
- Measure the dowel diameter and make a snug receiving hole in a scrap block that will cradle it.
- Drill a second hole through the block’s centerline to guide the bit along the required cross-hole path.
- Seat the dowel in the cradle and drill through the guide hole. The block restrains the round stock and directs the bit.
WOOD notes that a V-block is a traditional way to support round stock, but can be less dependable for this task, particularly with a twist bit. The guide-block advice does not specify universal clearances, clamping details, or accuracy tolerances; test the particular fixture on scrap before drilling a workpiece where position matters. Drill a hole into the dowel end
For a centered end hole, use a block that registers the dowel and guides the smaller bit. In WOOD’s threaded-insert example, the receiving hole is 1/2 inch deep and made with a Forstner or brad-point bit matching the dowel diameter. A through-hole in the block, centered on that receiver, guides the bit sized for the insert. Place the fixture over the dowel end and drill. For a centered through-hole in a short dowel
On a drill press, clamp a scrap board to the table, drill a receiving hole in it to fit the dowel, and leave the board in place. Insert the short dowel into the receiver and drill through it with the smaller bit. The receiver helps locate the dowel under the bit. WOOD Magazine, updated March 4, 2025
Make aligned dowel joints between boards
- Mark accurately. Use a marking knife or sharp pencil. WOOD cautions that a fat pencil tip makes precise location harder.
- Choose a suitable bit. For the cited end- and edge-grain holes, WOOD recommends a sharp brad-point bit; a twist bit can wander in these surfaces.
- Set drilling depth. WOOD’s recommendation is to drill 1/8 inch deeper than half the dowel length, leaving room for glue. Set a stop collar to control the depth.
- Keep a consistent reference face. Mark the faces and edges that must align, and reference the same face on both mating boards. The holes do not have to be centered through each board’s thickness if their positions match from the shared reference face.
- Transfer the locations. Drill the first piece, insert dowel centers into its holes, bring the mating piece into position, and press it against the centers. Their dimples mark where to drill the matching holes.
Kreg’s quick-start guide also advises selecting the appropriate dowel size and drill guide, tightening the stop collar securely, and clamping the jig whenever possible. These are specific precautions, not a complete safety procedure. Kreg quick-start guide

Check a doweling jig’s capacity before using it
A board-edge doweling jig is designed for joinery and should not be assumed to solve every cross-hole or end-hole setup. Published capacities help determine whether a jig suits the board and bit sizes in your project.
