The original Dreame L40 Ultra pairs vacuuming and mopping with a dock that empties dust, washes and dries mop pads, and handles water and detergent. That automation can reduce routine floor care, but it does not make the machine maintenance-free—and independent reviews disagree on how well it picks up debris. It is most compelling for homes that value automated mopping and can accommodate a large dock; households with carpet and pet hair should weigh the reported pickup limitations carefully.
What the original L40 Ultra includes
This review concerns the original Dreame L40 Ultra, introduced in 2024. It is not the L40 Ultra Gen 2, L40s Ultra, or regional AE and VE versions; those products have different published specifications. Check the exact model name and regional listing before buying, since a similar name does not establish that specifications, warranty, or consumables are interchangeable.
Dreame describes the original as a robot vacuum and mop that can vacuum and mop in one pass or run either task separately. Its US product page advertises 11,000 Pa suction and up to 194 minutes of vacuuming and mopping in Quiet Mode per charge. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measurements of cleaning performance or a guarantee of runtime in every home. Dreame says the robot returns to its dock when power is low and resumes after recharging. Dreame US product page
The US package contents listed by Dreame include two mop pads, a 200 mL cleaning-solution container, two 3.2 L dust bags (one pre-installed), and a cleaning tool. The same page states a one-year warranty for the US; warranty terms can differ by region or seller. Dreame US product page

How well does it clean floors?
Independent assessments are not uniform, so the L40 Ultra is better understood by floor type and debris than by a single overall score. RTINGS reports acceptable multi-surface performance overall, but found gaps in pickup on bare floors and pet-hair cleaning on carpet. TechRadar’s evaluation is more favorable about vacuuming and mopping features. Those are separate reviewers’ evaluations, not a shared test result or a guarantee for your home.
Bare floors
RTINGS found that the robot handled larger debris on bare floors but missed some fine and medium particles, with inconsistent pathing leaving patches. If your main goal is reliably collecting fine grit or smaller debris across hard flooring, that is a meaningful caveat; the advertised suction figure alone does not resolve it. TechRadar’s more positive assessment indicates a different overall evaluation, rather than disproving RTINGS’ specific observations. RTINGS review TechRadar review

Carpet and pet hair
RTINGS found carpet performance somewhat better than its bare-floor results, but reported debris left at edges and corners and insufficient brushroll agitation for good pet-hair pickup. That makes the L40 Ultra a less straightforward choice for homes where carpeted rooms and embedded pet hair are the primary cleaning challenge. The result is specific to that reviewer’s testing; it should not be generalized into a claim that the robot cannot pick up any hair or debris. RTINGS review
Mopping and reach
TechRadar viewed the mopping features and extendable side brush positively, including the robot’s mop behavior. Dreame says the app allows water-level adjustment and no-mop zones, which can help tailor runs to a home’s layout. These capabilities make the model attractive if routine mopping is a priority, but they do not establish that it will remove every dried-on mark or reach every edge in every room. What the dock automates—and what it does not
The dock is central to the L40 Ultra’s convenience. RTINGS describes automatic dustbin emptying, mop washing and drying, clean-water refilling, and a self-washing washboard. TechRadar’s specification table also lists detergent dispensing. RTINGS reports 4.5 L clean-water and 4 L dirty-water capacities, disposable 3.2 L dust bags, and a mop-wash temperature advertised at 149°F / 65°C. These are published product specifications, not a promise that users can leave the dock unattended indefinitely. RTINGS review TechRadar review
Ownership still involves checking and replenishing supplies, emptying or refilling tanks, replacing dust bags, and cleaning the dock and robot as needed. For setup, maintenance, and troubleshooting instructions, Dreame provides a support page with the L40 Ultra manual and help links. Replacement bags, mop pads, cleaning solution, and brush guards should be purchased only when the seller or manufacturer confirms compatibility with the exact original model and your region.

Will it fit in your home?
The dock requires substantial floor space. TechRadar lists its dimensions as 18 × 13.4 × 23.3 inches (W × D × H). Measure the proposed location and allow for the access and clearance specified in the product instructions before committing to a spot. TechRadar also lists 71 dB maximum noise in Max+ mode; that is a published specification, not an independent measurement of noise in your room. TechRadar review

Who should consider the Dreame L40 Ultra?
- A better fit: homes with substantial hard-floor areas, buyers who value automated mop washing and drying, and anyone with enough space for the dock and willingness to maintain its tanks and supplies.
- Think carefully: homes where dependable fine-debris pickup on bare floors is essential, given RTINGS’ reported misses and inconsistent pathing.
- Look closely at alternatives: carpet-heavy homes with pets, since RTINGS reported weak pet-hair pickup on carpet and remaining debris at edges and corners.
- Check before checkout: confirm the model generation and region, current local price, warranty, dock fit, and compatibility of replacement supplies.
Verdict
The original Dreame L40 Ultra is a convenience-focused vacuum-and-mop system, not a maintenance-free appliance or an unqualified cleaning-performance pick. Its automated dock and mopping features are the strongest reasons to consider it. The large footprint and mixed independent pickup findings—especially RTINGS’ carpet pet-hair results—make it a less certain match for carpet-heavy or pet-hair-focused homes. Whether it is worth the cost depends on how much you value dock automation, the floors you need cleaned, and the verified price of the exact original model available to you.
