What Is a Drawer-Lock Bit Used For?

A drawer-lock bit cuts an interlocking joint for drawer-box corners. It makes the complementary profiles for a drawer side and its front or back, helping the parts fit together. The bit is intended for a router table with a fence—not handheld routing—and its setup must match the exact cutter and stock thickness.

How a drawer-lock bit works

The cutter forms a shaped profile in the edges of two mating pieces. One cut goes on the drawer front or back; the matching cut goes on the side. When the profiles are aligned, they interlock at the corner. Some drawer-lock designs can also be used for drawer-bottom-related joinery, but the intended cuts depend on the bit’s profile and its manufacturer’s instructions.

A single cutter may make both halves of the joint, but that does not mean every setup or stock thickness is interchangeable. Cutter geometry, fence position, bit height, and material dimensions all affect the result.

What to check before choosing a bit

  • Stock thickness: Match the cutter to the thickness of the drawer parts. Lee Valley lists its small drawer-lock bit for 1/4-inch to 1/2-inch material; that is a specification for that product, not a universal range. See Lee Valley Tools’ small drawer-lock bit listing.
  • Shank and collet: Available products include different shank sizes, such as 1/2 inch and 8 mm. Confirm that the shank matches the router’s collet and the exact bit listing.
  • Intended cuts: Check whether the cutter suits the drawer parts and joint geometry you plan to make, and whether its instructions explain how to cut both mating pieces.
  • Setup directions: Use the maker’s guidance for the specific cutter rather than copying another model’s fence or height settings.

Use the bit safely in a router table

Use a router table equipped with a fence. Lee Valley’s product guidance says the bit should be used only in a router table with a fence, not freehand; WOOD Magazine also describes router-table use and warns against using the bit in a handheld router. Read the Lee Valley Drawer Lock Bit instructions and the WOOD Magazine drawer-lock bit guide for model-specific guidance.

Freud 99-240: 2" (Dia.) Drawer Lock Bit with 1/2" Shank, Perma-SHIELD Coating Red
  • Specs: Angle 30°, Minor Height 5/32", Number of Cutters 2, Overall Dia. 2", Overall Length 2", Shank Dia. 1/2", Small Dia. 1-3/4", Carbide Height 33/64"
  • One bit produces both the front and side drawer joints
  • Cuts all hardwood, softwood, plywood and composites
  • Use on table-mounted routers only
  • Freud Perma-SHIELD Coating

For side cuts, WOOD Magazine describes adjusting the fence and using a pushblock to control the work. Follow the cutter maker’s instructions for guarding and workpiece support, and do not treat another bit’s settings as a safe default.

Set up with scrap before cutting drawer parts

  1. Confirm the cutter and stock. Check the bit’s instructions, intended material thickness, and shank compatibility before installation.
  2. Install and configure it as directed. Mount the bit in the router table and set the fence and cutter height according to the instructions for that model and cut.
  3. Make trial cuts in matching scrap. Use scrap with the same thickness as the project stock. Adjust the setup in small increments until the mating profiles fit as intended.
  4. Keep a successful setup sample. Canadian Woodworking recommends trial cuts and preserving a sample once the fit is right. It can serve as a reference while you cut the remaining parts.

WOOD Magazine and Canadian Woodworking both describe practical setup and test-cutting. Their example settings are not universal: the correct position depends on the cutter profile and stock dimensions. See Canadian Woodworking’s overview of joinery bits.

Drawer-lock bit or miniature glue-joint bit?

A miniature glue-joint bit is one alternative for drawer joinery. Popular Woodworking describes it as producing more interlock but being less flexible about the wood thickness it handles. A drawer-lock bit offers more flexibility in stock thickness and can serve drawer-side and bottom-related joinery, depending on the design. Choose based on the stock you have, the joint geometry you want, and the cuts required for the planned drawer parts. See Popular Woodworking’s comparison of lock joints and glue-joint bits.
