How do you choose the right size and quantity?
Measure the span and the drop
Measure the rod or mounting area you want covered, then decide how far down the window the fabric should fall. Compare those measurements with the listing’s finished width and length. Some sellers state a flat width and a separate shorter visible length when hung; those are not interchangeable measurements. For a made-to-order sheer valance, VOGOL asks buyers for rod or board width and desired drop, and gives its own drop guidance. Use the seller’s coverage guidance for that model
Recommendations differ: Touch of Class suggests one valance per 12–15 inches of window width, while the Phase II 2017 guide recommends one unit per 23 inches. Those figures refer to different products and are not competing universal rules. Follow the guidance for the exact style you are ordering, and check whether the stated width is flat, gathered or intended to cover a particular span.

What size curtain rod fits a waterfall valance?
Match the rod diameter to the rod pocket or header specified by the product listing. A pocket measurement describes the fabric channel; it does not automatically tell you the maximum rod diameter.
- The Touch of Class example has a 1.5-inch rod pocket.
- Croscill says its Avignon valance’s 3-inch pocket is suitable for a rod up to 1.25 inches.
- Phase II’s 2017 guide lists 1.5-inch pocket/header options for rods up to 0.75 inch and a 3-inch pocket/header option for a larger rod.
Because pocket arrangements and rod limits vary, check the exact listing before buying a new rod or attempting to reuse one already installed.

How should fabric, lining and trim affect your choice?
Compare the material and construction stated for the specific valance. The cited examples include polyester, a semi-sheer style and a lined style with decorative trim. Do not infer a particular level of privacy or light blocking from a fabric name or appearance alone; the cited listings do not establish measured light performance.
If you want a coordinated treatment, check whether the collection offers matching panels and whether the rod or mounting arrangement leaves room for both layers. The Savoy listing identifies coordinated drapery fabric, and manufacturer material also shows valances used with panels or tiers, but neither establishes one best arrangement for every room. Follow the product’s care instructions: Croscill’s listing says to machine wash its cited valance according to its care label, while care directions differ among products.
