A remote-blower range hood places the motor away from the cooking area, but that configuration alone does not prove the kitchen will be quieter. The right choice is a matched system: a compatible hood or power pack, a separately selected exterior or attic-installed blower, and ductwork and fittings specified for that pairing. Before choosing by maximum CFM or the word “quiet,” verify the complete configuration and compare noise ratings at comparable operating settings.
What is a remote-blower range hood?
Unlike a hood with its motor built into the canopy or power pack, a remote-blower setup locates the blower elsewhere. Depending on the product, it may be mounted outside on a roof or wall, or installed inline in an attic. Broan-NuTone’s RMPE7004 specification says the power pack connects to an “exterior or attic-installed remote blower.” The power pack and blower are distinct components, and compatibility must be confirmed for the exact models.
Are remote-blower range hoods quieter?
Moving the motor away from the cooking area is relevant if you are trying to manage kitchen noise, but the manufacturer documentation cited here does not provide a controlled comparison proving that remote blowers are quieter than internal blowers. Nor does it establish a universal decibel reduction. Look for published sound ratings for the specific hood-and-blower pairing, and compare them at similar speeds or airflow levels; a rating at one operating setting is not directly comparable to a different setting.
How to compare a remote-blower system
- Confirm the exact pairing. Check the hood or power-pack documentation for compatible blower model numbers. Do not assume that a blower will work with a hood simply because both are from the same manufacturer.
- Identify where the blower goes. Determine whether the selected unit is intended for roof, exterior-wall, or attic installation, and check any stated clearances or minimum distance from the hood.
- Verify the duct path and fittings. Match the hood connection, blower connection, duct diameter, transitions, and rough-in kit to the manuals for that specific combination. Requirements differ by model.
- Read airflow figures in context. Distinguish an open-air maximum from a tested installed-system rating. Duct length, bends, transitions, and other installation details affect the finished system; a maximum CFM figure is not a guarantee of installed airflow.
- Price the complete system. Check whether the blower, rough-in parts, transitions, ductwork, and any compatible make-up-air components are included or sold separately. Follow the product installation instructions and confirm local requirements with the local authority or a qualified installer.

The RMPE7004 illustrates why the power pack and remote blower should be evaluated as a system. Its specification sheet lists these maximum CFM figures for specific blower configurations:

These are the maximum configuration figures in the RMPE7004 specification sheet, not a ranking of systems or a promise of installed performance. The sheet specifies an 8-inch round power-pack duct connection and directs readers to the blower specifications for duct requirements. It also identifies an optional 8-to-10-inch transition for connection to an exterior blower. Use the manuals for the selected blower and installation rather than transferring these details to another model.
Check the model 336 figures and availability carefully
Broan-NuTone’s model 336 product page describes the external blower as 1,620 maximum CFM for select Broan-NuTone hoods, while the RMPE7004 sheet lists 1,500 maximum CFM for model 336 in that power-pack configuration. Those figures come from different source contexts; neither should be substituted for the other or treated as a general installed-output claim. Confirm the current compatibility and ratings in the documentation for the exact hood-and-blower combination.

The model 336 product page also marks it discontinued, specifies roof or outside-wall mounting, lists rough-in kit 332KR and 10-inch round duct as requirements, and says: “Blower should be installed at least 10 feet away from the hood location”. Check current compatible products and availability before planning around this model.
Does the hood include the blower?
Not necessarily. The RMPE7004 is a power pack intended for use with a separately specified remote blower, and Broan-NuTone’s kitchen ventilation catalog notes that certain external and inline blowers are sold separately. Verify each product’s contents and make a bill of materials for the whole installation rather than comparing the hood price alone. The catalog also lists compatible make-up-air dampers for some configurations; that does not establish a universal legal requirement. Local rules vary, so consult the installation instructions and local authority or a qualified installer.

What “maximum CFM” can—and cannot—tell you
Broan-NuTone’s kitchen ventilation catalog defines maximum blower CFM in its cited table as open-air performance. That figure describes a stated product configuration under that context; it is not evidence that the installed hood will deliver the same airflow through a real duct run. For a useful comparison, look for system performance data with the test context stated, and account for the exact duct and installation requirements. The sources cited here do not establish a universal CFM recommendation for every kitchen.

Decision checklist before ordering
- Exact hood or power-pack model and compatible blower model are documented.
- Blower location, mounting method, and any minimum distance or clearance work for the planned route.
- Duct diameters, transitions, and rough-in components match the selected product instructions.
- Airflow claims are identified as open-air maximums or as performance tested under stated system conditions.
- Noise ratings, if published, are compared at comparable speeds or airflow levels.
- Separate purchases, including blower and applicable make-up-air parts, are included in the project budget.
- Availability is confirmed, especially for products marked discontinued.
- Installation instructions and local requirements are checked with a qualified professional where needed.
