Dutch Wave garden design uses plant-community-inspired planting, artistic composition and seasonal change to create a naturalistic look. To support wildlife as well as people, start with the conditions on your site—especially light, soil and moisture—and choose plants and habitat features that fit them. The style is not a certification of ecological benefit, nor does a naturalistic appearance guarantee a resilient or maintenance-free garden.

What does “Dutch Wave” mean?

Museum Voorlinden describes The Dutch Wave as a movement in garden architecture inspired by natural plant communities, art and the seasons. It identifies Piet Oudolf as part of the movement and as the designer of its garden. The term is best understood here as an approach to composition, not a standardized technical or ecological certification. Museum Voorlinden

Rather than relying on a fixed plant list, this approach can use differences in height, texture, form and seasonal development to make a planting read as a composed whole. Plants may be grouped and interwoven to suggest the variation found in plant communities.

How do I make a garden look naturalistic and still support wildlife?

Begin with habitat fit, not appearance. Naturalis Biodiversity Center, working with TU Delft on a nature-inclusive garden-design framework, recommends considering six connected factors: food, moisture, safety, reproduction, connectivity and variation. That framework is intended to help designers account for species’ needs; it does not quantify biodiversity gains for every garden. Naturalis Biodiversity Center

Match planting to the site

Before choosing plants, note the available sunlight, drainage and moisture conditions. Select plants suited to those conditions and to one another’s habitat needs. A plant combination that works in a sunny, well-drained garden may not suit a shady or wet site, and the sources cited here do not establish a location-specific plant list. Ask a local nursery, extension service or garden professional for recommendations suited to your region.

Think beyond flowers

Consider how the garden can provide food, cover and places for reproduction, as well as how it connects with nearby habitats. Varying plant forms and heights can contribute to a more complex planting, but a naturalistic look alone does not demonstrate that wildlife benefits have been measured.

What does Dutch Wave planting look like in practice?

Berkshire Botanical Garden’s New Wave Garden offers one example: it combines plants from similar habitats in an irregular, interwoven pattern with different heights. The garden is designed for a sunny, well-drained site and primarily relies on natural rainfall. Those conditions and practices describe this particular garden, not a universal formula. How does the Voorlinden garden change through the seasons?

Museum Voorlinden says Oudolf’s garden contains more than sixty species of perennials and ornamental grasses and blooms across three seasons. The museum describes it as an evolving work worth visiting year-round, with gardeners tending it daily. This example shows how seasonal structure can be part of the design while also making clear that a naturalistic garden can require regular stewardship. It does not establish a required species count or care schedule for other gardens. Museum Voorlinden

Does a naturalistic garden need less maintenance?

It depends on the site, planting and the level of care expected. Berkshire Botanical Garden says plants adapted to similar habitats mean less weeding and watering in its New Wave Garden. It leaves seed heads through winter and waits until spring to cut plants back, while noting seasonal care. These are choices and observations for that garden, not a promise that every naturalistic planting will need little water or upkeep. Berkshire Botanical Garden

For your own design, consider establishment work as well as ongoing tasks: which plants need attention as they settle in, when you will cut back growth, and whether the desired appearance calls for regular care. A suitable planting may reduce some inputs, but design does not eliminate maintenance.
