Dovetail keys are small, shaped woodworking fasteners inserted into routed slots to join or reinforce parts—especially at mitered corners. Hoffmann’s W-series keys are designed as a fitted system: choose the key’s cross-section and length, check the stock thickness and joint, and use a compatible cutter and machine.
What are dovetail keys used for?
In woodworking, a dovetail key fits into a matching routed slot to connect or reinforce joined pieces. The Hoffmann W-series is described as a self-clamping joining system used for mitered corners, frames, and casework. The manufacturer also lists butt, compound-miter, and end-to-end joints, with applications such as cabinet doors, furniture, molding, and display cases.
These keys are intended for production and assembly work across furniture, windows and doors, architectural millwork, picture framing, and store fixtures. They are not a substitute for selecting a joint and routing setup appropriate to the workpiece.
How the Hoffmann W-series is sized
The W number identifies the key’s cross-section, not its length. Hoffmann offers W0 through W4 sizes, with corresponding router-bit sizes. The key, cutter, and machine therefore need to be treated as a matched setup rather than interchangeable parts.

W1 and W2: examples of choosing a size
W1 for smaller or thinner stock
Hoffmann describes W1 as preferred for smaller or thinner stock. Treat that as a manufacturer’s general size-selection description, not a substitute for checking the dimensions and requirements of a particular joint.
W2 as a broad-use option
Hoffmann describes W2 as versatile and used across a broad set of applications. Its cross-section is approximately 3/8 inch wide by 5/16 inch tall. W2 key lengths range from 1/4 inch to 2 3/8 inches, so confirm the actual length as well as the W size when ordering.

The listing identifies this key as part number W9201200 and gives an example package quantity of 1,000 keys per box.
Color and visibility
Hoffmann lists W2 in standard brown, with white and black options in limited lengths and wood-match colors for certain lengths. The manufacturer positions these color variants for visible applications and cautions that depicted colors are approximate. Check the selected product’s available color and length together; not every color is offered in every length.

Check compatibility and pack quantity before ordering
- Identify the joint. Decide whether the application is a miter, butt, compound miter, or end-to-end joint, then confirm the key is suitable for that use.
- Choose the cross-section and length. Select the W size for the application and verify the listed length separately.
- Check the workpiece. Confirm stock thickness against guidance for the exact key product.
- Match the tooling. Hoffmann says W sizes correspond to router-bit sizes. Confirm the exact cutter and machine compatibility; a catalog listing for a related bit alone does not establish compatibility with every key or machine.
- Verify the order details. Check part number, color, length, and carton quantity before comparing prices. Specialist catalogs include large-pack options, including 1,000-key boxes; retail prices and inventory may change.
