The Las Vegas Underground House is a Cold War-era residence built roughly 26 feet below ground, with a pool, guest house and landscaped setting designed to evoke an ordinary luxury home. Its often-repeated $18 million price was a 2019 asking price—not its current value or sale price. A Hoodline report dated October 5, 2026, says Zak Bagans bought the property for $4.55 million and plans to turn it into a public museum; no opening date has been reported.
What is the Las Vegas “Doomsday Mansion”?
“Doomsday Mansion” is a popular nickname for the Las Vegas Underground House, a subterranean residence associated with Avon executive Girard “Jerry” Henderson. The Real Deal reported in 2019 that the home sits about 26 feet underground, a few miles east of the Las Vegas Strip. It was built in the 1970s, in the Cold War era, when the idea of domestic shelter from nuclear attack had particular resonance. The Real Deal’s 2019 account describes the design intent as making the underground property resemble a normal dwelling while offering protection from nuclear bombardment. That description is not an engineering assessment: the available reporting does not establish a blast rating or certify the home as a modern nuclear shelter.
How does an underground home feel like a mansion?
The striking feature is the contrast between its underground location and its staged domestic landscape. The Real Deal reported a guest house, swimming pool, trees and a grill in a front-yard setting. Realtor.com described the residence as a time capsule blending bunker, fantasyland and period domestic design. Realtor.com’s feature captures why the house is more than a reinforced room: it was presented as an elaborate place to live, with amenities and an environment intended to suggest life above ground.
The property also connects to Henderson’s earlier interest in underground living. He sponsored the Underground World Home exhibit at the 1964 New York World’s Fair, several years before the Las Vegas house was built, according to The Real Deal.

The $18 million figure was a listing price reported in 2019, not a completed sale. The Real Deal said the house returned to the market in January 2019 at that asking price and cited a prior $1.15 million sale in 2014. Realtor.com later also identified the $18 million 2019 list price, but described the $1.15 million transaction as a foreclosure rescue in 2015. The reports do not resolve the one-year difference, so the earlier transaction date depends on which outlet is cited.

|---|---|---|
| Earlier transaction | $1.15 million; The Real Deal reported a 2014 sale, while Realtor.com described a 2015 foreclosure rescue. | Past transaction reporting; the dates differ between outlets. |
| 2019 listing | $18 million, reported by The Real Deal. | Asking price, not evidence of a sale at that amount. |
| 2026 purchase | $4.55 million, reported by Hoodline on October 5, 2026. | Recent reported purchase price, distinct from the old asking price. |
The Real Deal reported 15,000 square feet in 2019; Hoodline’s 2026 report describes approximately 16,000 square feet. The sources do not establish whether they count the same areas, so neither figure should be treated as a definitive total.
