Stay inside the operator’s compartment, keep every safety device working, lower the arms and attachment before exiting, and keep people clear of the machine’s travel and lifting areas. Skid steers can strike, pin, crush, or overturn on operators and nearby workers; a few consistent rules help control those hazards.

What makes skid steer work hazardous?

The operator sits close to the lift arms and their movement zone. Leaning or reaching outside while the arms move can expose the operator to impact and pinch points. Workers on foot can be struck or pinned by the loader or crushed by an attachment.

In its August 17, 2026 toolbox talk, NIOSH describes a fatal incident in which a worker near a loader fell beneath a bucket as it was being raised. Keep people away from lifting operations and establish clear communication and separation before moving the machine or raising its arms. Read NIOSH’s Skid Steer Loader Safety Toolbox Talk.

How should operators use the machine?

  • Operate only from the operator’s compartment. Never reach the controls from outside the machine.
  • Stay seated with the seat belt fastened and the restraint bar in place. Keep your head, arms, and legs inside the compartment.
  • Use the loader’s safety systems as designed. Do not bypass or disable interlocks, restraint bars, side screens, seat belts, or other safeguards.
  • Work on stable surfaces; use level ground where possible when loading, unloading, or turning.
  • Before operating, check that safety devices—including interlocked controls, backup alarms, the seat belt, ROPS, and lift arm supports—are present and functioning. Follow the loader’s manual and decals.

NIOSH’s 2026 reminder is direct: “Run the loader from the operator’s compartment, never from the outside.” OSHA likewise states that “Properly maintained and functioning seatbelts and control interlock systems are critical to the safe operation of skid-steer loaders.” Read OSHA’s safety bulletin on skid-steer loader safety devices.

  • 7.5 TON SKID STEER SKIDDING WINCH ATTACHMENT: Harness the hydraulic power of your skid steer to easily pull heavy loads, including fallen logs, stuck vehicles, debris, and construction materials with controlled force and precision.
  • LONG AND DURABLE REACH: Equipped with 93 FT and 6" of 0.5" thick wire cable, this winch provides a long reach and exceptional strength to tackle heavy loads over long distances. With a line speed of 16.7 feet per minute, this winch makes fast work of pulling jobs.
  • GEAR DRIVEN MOTOR AND MANUAL CLUTCH SYSTEM: This attachment has a gear-driven motor to amplify your skid steer's hydraulic force for more pulling power with built in pressure relief to protect the motor from overload, and a manual clutch system for adjusting the position of the cable when needed.
  • GROUND STABILIZER INCLUDED: A ground stabilizer with four 0.5" thick teeth ensures the winch stays steady during operation, even when handling heavier loads on uneven terrain.
  • UNIVERSAL SSQA CONNECTION: This skid steer skidding winch attachment has an SSQA connection and quickly attaches to any skid steer with a universal skid steer mounting system. This model includes a safety screen for safe operation from the cab.

What should you do before leaving the loader?

  1. Lower the lift arms and attachment flat to the ground.
  2. Shut off the engine and engage the parking brake.
  3. Lock the controls if the machine provides that function.
  4. Follow the specific loader’s manual and decals for shutdown and securing procedures.

Never work beneath raised lift arms unless the manufacturer-approved lift arm support for that loader is installed and used as directed. Confirm compatibility with the machine’s manual; do not substitute a generic support or rely on the hydraulic system to hold the arms up. See NIOSH’s guidance on preventing injuries and deaths from skid-steer loaders.

How can crews keep workers on foot out of danger?

  • Keep workers clear of the loader’s travel path, lifting area, and attachment while it is operating.
  • Before moving or raising the arms, make sure people are outside the hazard area and can be accounted for.
  • Agree on clear communication between the operator and ground workers, and maintain separation during machine movement and lifting.
  • Do not let anyone stand beneath a raised bucket or arms.

What should employers and supervisors check?

Employers should instruct workers to recognize and avoid unsafe conditions, inspect work sites and equipment, and enforce rules against bypassing safety devices. OSHA’s 2009 bulletin emphasizes training, seat belts, and functioning control interlocks. It also discusses potential obligations under the General Duty Clause for recognized hazards where feasible abatement is available; the bulletin is not a complete legal analysis. The applicable requirements depend on the workplace, task, equipment, and jurisdiction.

OSHA’s construction regulation, 29 CFR 1926.602, reserves specific rules for compactors and rubber-tired skid-steer equipment pending consideration of standards. The section also contains general earthmoving-equipment provisions and refers to separate ROPS provisions. Reserved language does not remove every other workplace-safety obligation. Check current requirements for your workplace and equipment.
