Don’t Use Epsom Salt on Plants Without a Soil-Tested Need

Epsom salt is not a routine garden tonic. Learn why soil-test results—not a blanket plant blacklist or garden recipe—should determine whether to use it.

There is no evidence-based blacklist of plant species that must never receive Epsom salt. The safer rule is simpler: don’t add it routinely. Epsom salt is magnesium sulfate, and it is useful only when a plant or soil needs magnesium or sulfur. Without that need, it can add soluble salts, injure plants, or interfere with nutrient balance.

When should you avoid Epsom salt in the garden?

Skip an application if you do not have a soil test or qualified diagnosis showing a need for magnesium or sulfur. It is also a poor choice when a soil test shows adequate or high nutrient levels, when soil salinity is already elevated, or when the proposed treatment conflicts with the report’s recommendations. Washington State University Extension warns that Epsom salt increases soil salinity; excess soluble salts can make it harder for plants to take up water.

Risk depends on the soil, amount and frequency applied, and the plant’s sensitivity. That is why a universal list of plants that must never receive Epsom salt is not supported by the available Extension guidance. Iowa State Extension’s list of salt-sensitive garden plants concerns soluble salts generally, not a special Epsom-salt prohibition for those species.

Why can Epsom salt harm plants?

Magnesium is an essential plant nutrient, but more is not automatically better. Epsom salt supplies magnesium and sulfur; if the soil already has enough, adding more may contribute unnecessary salts and disturb the balance of nutrients. Clemson Cooperative Extension notes that many garden soils already have sufficient magnesium, particularly where organic matter has been added.

Excess soluble salts can cause foliage burn, restrict root growth, and reduce flowering, according to Iowa State Extension. Seeds and seedlings are especially vulnerable, and plant species vary in their salt sensitivity. The University of Georgia Extension also cautions that overuse of magnesium sulfate can cause salt injury and deficiencies of other nutrients.

Can I add Epsom salts to my plants?

Only when a credible soil test or qualified diagnosis indicates that magnesium or sulfur is needed. NC State Extension notes that magnesium sulfate can sometimes help, particularly in sandy soils that may be low in magnesium or sulfur. That is a conditional use, not a reason to apply it to every plant or garden bed.

Start with a professional soil test and follow its lime and fertilizer recommendations. Clemson recommends using an accredited soil or agricultural laboratory and warns that at-home kits can be inaccurate or inconsistent. Your local Extension service can explain testing options for your area. A soil report helps distinguish a nutrient deficiency from other causes of poor growth and avoids adding nutrients the soil does not need.

Does Epsom salt help tomatoes and peppers?

Do not use Epsom salt as a routine tomato or pepper treatment, or as a guaranteed way to increase blooms or yield. A plant’s presence in the garden does not establish a magnesium deficiency; test results should guide any nutrient correction.

It does not cure blossom-end rot

Epsom salt is not a remedy for blossom-end rot. UF/IFAS Extension explains that the disorder is commonly associated with calcium delivery and growing conditions, including uneven watering or excess nitrogen. Excess magnesium can tie up calcium and make the problem worse. Address the underlying conditions rather than adding magnesium sulfate.

What if a plant’s leaves are yellowing?

Do not diagnose magnesium deficiency from yellow leaves alone. UGA Extension describes magnesium deficiency in the cited perennial guidance as interveinal chlorosis on lower leaves, but yellowing can have other causes. A soil and foliage test can help identify whether a nutrient correction is appropriate and what correction is needed.

What to do before applying Epsom salt

  1. Test the soil. Use an accredited laboratory or a service recommended by your local Extension office.
  2. Read the recommendations. Apply magnesium sulfate only if the results or a qualified diagnosis indicate a need, and follow the report’s guidance.
  3. Do not use a general recipe as a substitute for diagnosis. Claims that Epsom salt boosts flowering or yield, deters pests, improves transplant success, or fixes blossom-end rot are not supported by the cited Extension sources.
