The difference depends on each bulb’s actual wattage, how many hours it runs, your electricity rate, and whether it produces enough light for the space.
Why LED bulbs usually cost less to run
A bulb’s wattage measures the power it draws; lumens measure the visible light it produces. To make a fair comparison, match brightness rather than relying on labels such as “60-watt equivalent.” The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) lists an 800-lumen incandescent bulb at 60 watts and LED options producing that light at 5.9 to 10.5 watts. DOE bulb-purchasing guidance explains the importance of comparing lumens and power use.
At the same brightness and operating time, a lower-wattage LED uses fewer kilowatt-hours (kWh). It still adds to electricity use when switched on; it typically adds less than an incandescent that gives comparable light.
Estimate the cost for your own bulbs
Use the bulb’s rated wattage, the hours it is on, and your electricity price per kWh. For an annual estimate:

Example: one bulb used three hours a day
Assume a 60 W incandescent and an 8 W LED each run three hours daily, and electricity costs $0.16 per kWh. These are illustrative assumptions, not an average household result or a guaranteed saving.
| Bulb | Annual energy | Annual energy cost |
|---|---|---|
| 60 W incandescent | 65.7 kWh | $10.51 |
| 8 W LED | 8.76 kWh | $1.40 |
| Difference | 56.94 kWh less | About $9.11 less |
Multiply a per-bulb result by the number of bulbs only when their wattage, brightness, and daily use are comparable. Replace the example’s wattages, hours, and rate with your own figures.

How DOE’s published cost examples compare
DOE’s Federal Energy Management Program models three 800-lumen bulb choices. Its annual energy-cost estimates assume electricity at $0.099 per kWh; they are not current local prices or predictions for every home. DOE’s bulb-purchasing guidance also gives lifetime-cost assumptions of 10.7 hours of daily use and a 25,000-hour rated life.
| DOE bulb category | Wattage for 800 lumens | Modeled annual energy cost |
|---|---|---|
| Best available | 5.5 W | $2.12 |
| ENERGY STAR | 11 W | $4.25 |
| Less efficient | 18 W | $6.95 |
The figures show why both brightness and actual wattage matter: two bulbs that provide 800 lumens can have different energy costs.

What can change a fixture’s electricity use?
- Wattage and light output: Compare the bulb’s actual watts and lumens, not just an incandescent-equivalent label.
- Time in use and bulb count: A bulb used longer or more often contributes more energy consumption; household totals depend on all the bulbs being counted.
- Fixture and power-supply design: DOE notes that fixture design, power-supply efficiency, and additional features can affect consumption. See DOE’s LED Basics guidance.
- Fit and controls: Check the bulb’s base and shape against the fixture. DOE cautions that some LED bulbs may be larger near the base. For enclosed fixtures or dimmers, verify that the bulb is suitable for that use rather than assuming every LED will work.
Put national lighting figures in context
DOE reported that lighting represented 7.8% of electricity use in U.S. residential and commercial buildings in 2020. A separate DOE consumer guide says lighting accounts for about 15% of an average home’s electricity use. These figures have different scopes and dates; neither should be treated as a measured share of every household’s bill. DOE’s 2020 lighting-market characterization reports 244 TWh of lighting consumption in U.S. buildings in 2020, approximately 69% of it in the commercial sector. DOE’s lighting-market characterization provides that national context.
DOE has also published historical estimates of broader savings from LED adoption: its 2020 report estimated annual U.S. savings of 1.3 quadrillion Btu and $14.7 billion, based on 2018 conditions. That modeled national estimate is not a forecast of what an individual household will save. DOE’s LED adoption report describes the estimate.

What the 2028 lamp standard means for a household
In 2024, DOE estimated that its general-service-lamp efficiency standards would save households $1.6 billion annually. Compliance applies to newly produced or imported lamps beginning July 25, 2028. This future standard is a national estimate; it does not require current owners to replace working bulbs. See DOE’s 2024 standards announcement.
