Choose a detergent labeled HE (High Efficiency); Samsung does not identify one brand as universally best. Pick HE liquid or powder according to your needs, follow your washer’s model-specific instructions, and measure the dose carefully.
What detergent should you use in a Samsung top-load washer?
Samsung’s US guidance says, “Your Samsung washing machine requires HE (High Efficiency) detergent.” Samsung Canada likewise says you can choose your preferred brand provided it is HE detergent. Powder or liquid?
Samsung says liquid and powder have essentially the same cleaning performance. The practical difference is how they suit a particular wash—not evidence that one format always cleans better.
- HE liquid: Consider it for cold-water washes, since powder can be harder to dissolve in cold water. Samsung also says liquid can be used to pretreat stains on heavily soiled clothing; follow the detergent and garment directions.
- HE powder: A suitable option if you prefer powder. On the top-load drawer described in Samsung’s US guidance, remove the liquid-detergent cup and add powder directly to the compartment as instructed.
Where do detergent, pods, and sheets go?
For the top-load drawer covered by Samsung’s US guidance, put liquid detergent in the liquid-detergent cup in the main compartment. For powder, remove that cup before adding detergent to the compartment. Drawer designs and instructions can differ, so confirm the arrangement in your washer’s user manual.

Samsung says HE pods and sheets belong in the tub or drum, not the drawer, where supported by the model instructions. Samsung’s guidance excludes pods and sheets from the upper washer on Flex Wash models. Check your exact model’s manual before using either format.

How much detergent should you use?
Use the detergent maker’s directions for the load and product, measure rather than estimate, and do not fill the washer’s dispenser beyond its MAX line. The right amount depends on the load, the detergent’s concentration, and the washer’s dispenser; there is no single tablespoon or capful amount that fits every case.
Samsung warns that too much detergent can build up and affect washer performance; overfilling can stain clothing or damage the appliance. Because HE detergent is concentrated, adding extra is not Samsung’s suggested solution when results disappoint. Its US guidance says to consider switching detergent instead.
