Snapdragons, sweet alyssum, calendula, annual vinca and strawflower are five annuals that university extension services list as rarely damaged or browsed by deer. That makes them sensible choices—not guaranteed protection. Deer feeding depends on local conditions, and hungry animals may eat plants they usually avoid.

Which annual flowers do deer usually leave alone?

These five flowers appear in university extension guidance on annuals that deer rarely damage or browse. Snapdragon and sweet alyssum appear on lists from Iowa State, the University of Georgia and Oklahoma State. Calendula and annual vinca appear in Iowa State and Georgia guidance, while Oklahoma State also includes related annual flower recommendations. Strawflower appears on Iowa State and Oklahoma State lists.

Annual Botanical name Extension-list support
Snapdragon Antirrhinum majus Iowa State, University of Georgia and Oklahoma State
Sweet alyssum Lobularia maritima Iowa State, University of Georgia and Oklahoma State
Pot marigold (calendula) Calendula officinalis University of Georgia lists calendula; Iowa State lists pot marigold. Oklahoma State lists French marigold, a different plant.
Annual vinca (periwinkle) Catharanthus roseus Iowa State and University of Georgia, with related annual-flower guidance from Oklahoma State
Strawflower Helichrysum bracteatum Iowa State and Oklahoma State

The common name “marigold” can refer to different plants: pot marigold is calendula, while French marigold is Tagetes patula. The lists support a relative browsing tendency, not a guarantee or a precise ranking among cultivars.

Why deer resistance is never a sure thing

Iowa State Extension notes that damage varies with location, deer population and the availability of other food. The University of Georgia Cooperative Extension puts the limitation plainly: “There is no such thing as a deer-resistant plant, and when deer populations are high and food becomes scarce, deer may feed on plants that are thought to be deer-tolerant.”

Treat these flowers as lower-risk choices, not as a substitute for protection where browsing pressure is high.

How to use the list in your garden

  1. Check local growing conditions. Confirm that each flower suits your region, sun exposure, soil, watering routine and planting dates. The extension deer lists do not establish that every plant will thrive in every garden; Clemson Cooperative Extension offers additional annual and perennial guidance with some growing-condition context.
  2. Choose seeds or nursery starts. Either is a practical way to plant these annuals. The choice does not change the uncertainty of deer browsing.
  3. Protect plants if deer pressure is substantial. Oklahoma State recommends combining tactics, including fencing and protecting browse-prone plants with repellent. Follow local guidance and product directions when selecting a prevention method.
  4. Watch the plants after planting. If deer begin feeding, respond with added protection rather than assuming a plant on a resistant list will remain untouched.
