Neither wire can be identified as positive by color alone. A black wire with a white stripe has no universal polarity meaning; its function depends on the equipment, harness, and circuit. Sony documentation, for example, identifies certain black-marked wires as negative speaker leads in specific car-stereo harnesses. That convention does not identify an unknown wire in a building or another device.
Why color alone cannot answer the question
Wire colors and stripes can indicate a function within a particular manufacturer’s wiring scheme, but their meaning is not established for every black-and-white-striped conductor. The same-looking wire may serve a different purpose in another product or circuit. Without knowing the equipment and wiring context, it is not possible to determine whether a specific wire is positive or negative from these colors.
This is especially important in construction: the examples below concern car-stereo speaker harnesses, not building wiring. They do not establish a general electrical-code interpretation for black wires or striped conductors in a home or other building.
What Sony’s car-stereo harness examples show
Sony’s documentation gives specific meanings for wires in two harness contexts. These examples show why the harness diagram matters; they should not be generalized to other equipment.

In these Sony examples, a color name followed by “or Black” describes a specific speaker lead in a documented harness. It does not mean that any black wire with a white stripe is negative—or that a plain black wire is positive.
How to identify a wire safely
- Identify the equipment and circuit. Determine the exact device, harness or installation, and whether the wire belongs to a speaker, power connection, or another circuit. If you cannot identify these, do not connect or test the wire based on color.
- Find the exact wiring diagram. Use the documentation for the equipment’s model and harness, and match the diagram’s pin or function labels to the wire in question. A diagram for a different model or harness may use different conventions.
- Stop if the identification remains unclear. Do not assume an unidentified conductor is safe to touch, connect, or test. Sony advises contacting a qualified car-stereo installer if more installation information is needed; for other electrical work, seek a qualified professional appropriate to that system.
No single polarity-testing procedure is appropriate for every possible circuit, including vehicle, speaker, low-voltage, and mains wiring. The circuit must be identified before choosing a safe method.

What this means for building wiring
The Sony examples apply only to the specified car-stereo harnesses. They do not tell you the function of a black or striped conductor in building wiring, and they are not a substitute for the applicable wiring diagram or qualified electrical guidance. If the wire is part of a building circuit and its function is uncertain, stop work until it has been identified appropriately.
