For a low-maintenance, humid scene, choose a lidded container and small plants that share similar light and moisture needs. Keep it in bright, indirect light, water sparingly, and check its condition rather than assuming it will care for itself.
Choose the right bottle and style
A clear glass jar, bowl, or bottle can work. A lid helps create the humid conditions of a closed terrarium, while a wide opening makes planting, trimming, and cleaning much easier than a narrow neck. Tinted glass restricts light, and a closed container should have a cover, according to Penn State Extension.
| Choice | Best suited to | Practical trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Closed terrarium | Small plants that tolerate high humidity | Can recycle moisture, so it may need less frequent watering; excess moisture and heat still need attention. |
| Open terrarium | A broader range of plants, including options that prefer less humidity | Easier to reach and tend, but does not retain moisture like a closed vessel. |
| Wide-mouth vessel | First-time builders and scenes that need regular trimming | More room to place plants and work inside. |
| Narrow-neck bottle | A bottle-shaped look when you are comfortable with difficult access | Harder to plant, water, and maintain; long tweezers can help. |
Closed terrariums are not suitable for every plant. Penn State Extension advises against putting cacti and succulents in a closed terrarium; choose an open container or dish garden for them instead.

1. Moss-only landscape
Create a simple carpet of moss and add one small stone or piece of wood as a focal point. Moss is a natural terrarium choice, but confirm the species is appropriate for your conditions and legally sourced in your region. Penn State Extension includes moss among suitable terrarium options.
2. Miniature fern woodland
Use one or a few small ferns, leaving some substrate visible around them. Miniature ferns are among the possibilities described by University of Vermont Extension. If you combine plants, make sure they share the same light and moisture requirements.

3. Hills and valleys
Shape the growing medium into one low ridge and a shallow valley. This adds depth without filling the bottle with ornaments. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach suggests creating hills and valleys in larger terrariums.
4. One focal plant
Choose a small, visually distinctive plant that tolerates the humidity level of the vessel. Keep the surrounding space open so the plant remains the focus and has room to grow.

- COMPLETE DIY TERRARIUM KIT — Create your own miniature botanical display with a coordinated set of materials and tools in one kit. The glass globe, live moss, layering materials, decorative pieces and mini tools give you the essentials to build and personalize your terrarium from the ground up
- REAL LIVE MOSS INCLUDED — Unlike kits built only around decorative or artificial materials, this terrarium set includes real live moss to bring natural texture and color into your finished arrangement. Follow the included care guidance to help the moss recover after shipping and maintain it as part of your terrarium.
- LAYER, BUILD & PERSONALIZE — Arrange the included substrates, sand, gravel, moss and decorative accents to create depth, texture and your own miniature landscape. Mini tools help with placing and adjusting smaller details, making the building process part of the experience rather than simply displaying a finished product.
- GLASS GLOBE DISPLAY — The clear glass globe keeps the miniature arrangement visible from multiple angles, while the coordinated wood base and metal frame create a finished display for desks, shelves, tables and other indoor spaces. The compact design turns the completed terrarium into part of your decor.
- STAND OR HANG — Display the finished terrarium on its wood base or use the included hanging rope for another presentation option. The flexible format makes it easy to incorporate the finished piece into a desk, shelf, tabletop or other indoor display area.
5. Three-part composition
For a little more variety, combine an upright plant, a low or trailing plant, and one of intermediate height. This height mix works only when the plants also have compatible light and moisture needs; Iowa State University Extension describes it as a general design approach, while Penn State emphasizes matching growing conditions.
How to make a bottle garden
- Choose and clean the vessel. Use a clear, transparent container. A lidded, wide-mouth jar is a practical starting point: the lid supports a humid environment, and the opening makes assembly and care easier. Clean and dry the vessel before planting.
- Decide whether to add a base layer. Extension recommendations differ. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach recommends about a 2-inch layer of gravel, pebbles, or perlite to provide space for excess water, followed by a thin charcoal layer. Penn State Extension’s guide, updated April 13, 2026, says a rock layer does not improve drainage in a closed terrarium and may be omitted. Neither gravel nor charcoal is a universal requirement; careful watering is important whichever approach you choose.
- Add the growing medium. Use a light, soilless potting mix with relatively low fertility. Penn State cautions that garden soil is heavy and can compact. If you want a landscape effect, shape the mix into a gentle ridge and valley before planting.
- Select and place plants. Choose healthy, small plants with slow or naturally dwarf growth and similar light and moisture needs. Set them in place without crowding, then gently firm the mix around their roots. A wide opening lets you work by hand; a narrow-neck bottle may require long tweezers.
- Water lightly and position the garden. Add only enough water to moisten the growing medium rather than saturating it. Set the finished terrarium in medium to bright indirect light, away from direct sun. An east- or north-facing window is one option suggested by Iowa State University Extension.
Care for the garden without overwatering
A closed terrarium can recycle some of its moisture: water evaporates from the soil and plants, condenses on the inner surface, and returns to the growing medium. That cycle can reduce watering, but the container is not automatically self-sufficient. Check the plants, soil, and condensation instead of following a fixed calendar.

- Water only when it needs it. Penn State Extension advises adding water when condensation has stopped, plants droop, or the soil feels dry. Iowa State University Extension and Outreach says many closed terrariums may need water every three to six months, but the interval varies with soil, plant species, light, and other conditions. Treat that interval as a conditional guideline, not a schedule.
- Respond to excess condensation. If moisture builds up heavily inside, Iowa State recommends cracking the lid to let some escape. Avoid adding more water while the growing medium is already wet.
- Remove dead material and trim growth. Take out yellowing or dying leaves and prune or pinch plants that become too tall or crowded. University of Illinois Extension recommends removing dying leaves and pruning or pinching tall plants.
- Watch light and heat. Keep a closed glass garden out of direct sunlight. Bright, indirect light is safer because an enclosed glass container can heat quickly.
Common bottle garden mistakes
- Choosing plants for appearance alone: Combine only plants with compatible light and moisture needs; avoid succulents and cacti in closed terrariums.
- Using a vessel that is hard to work in: Narrow openings make planting and maintenance harder. Choose a wide mouth if ease of care matters more than the bottle silhouette.
- Assuming a gravel layer guarantees drainage: Extension guidance disagrees on its value in a closed terrarium. Do not rely on a base layer to compensate for overwatering.
- Placing the terrarium in direct sun: A sealed glass container can heat up quickly. Use bright, indirect light.
- Watering by the calendar: Moisture needs vary. Check condensation, soil, and plant condition before adding water.
