A tropical-looking garden is built from bold foliage, contrasting leaf shapes, architectural forms and vivid flowers—not necessarily from plants that are truly tropical. Combine hardy plants for lasting structure with tender plants in movable containers or seasonal displays, and choose each plant for your garden’s light, shelter, soil and winter conditions.

How do you create a tropical garden?

Think in layers and contrasts. Use large leaves as a focal point, then set them against fine-textured foliage, upright architectural plants and lower groundcover. Add flower color as a seasonal accent rather than relying on flowers to create the whole effect. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) describes subtropical schemes as exuberant combinations of large leaves, structural forms and striking flower colors, and advises choosing hardy tropical-look plants suited to outdoor temperatures.

Build the permanent framework from plants that can remain outdoors in your local conditions. Use tender plants for seasonal impact, or grow them in containers that can be moved to protection. In shade, hardy ferns and hostas can provide a lower layer; on a patio or courtyard, a container can create a flexible focal point. Bamboo, hardy hibiscus, jasmine and honeysuckle may also contribute an exotic feel, depending on cultivar and site.

Look for a sheltered microclimate, such as a protected corner near a wall, while checking that the spot still provides the light and moisture the chosen plant needs. Large leaves can be shredded by wind, and exposed locations make winter damage more likely. The RHS offers further design guidance in A Touch of Tropical: Lush Garden Ideas and Create an Exotic or Subtropical Garden.

Which tropical-looking plants can survive winter?

Hardiness is conditional, not a guarantee. A plant’s outcome depends on local climate, exposure, drainage, whether it is in the ground or a container, and how established it is. The RHS guidance below is UK-specific; elsewhere, check local hardiness information and regional growing advice before choosing plants.

Plant Visual effect Conditions and winter approach
Musa basjoo (Japanese banana) Large paddle-shaped leaves create a bold focal point. RHS plant-guide estimates for a mature plant are 2.5–4 m high and 1.5–2.5 m wide; actual size varies by site. Needs a warm, sheltered, sunny position and rich soil kept consistently moist—not dry or waterlogged. The RHS says it may remain outdoors in a sheltered UK garden, but should be wrapped against harsh frost. Most bananas are tender and need frost-free winter protection. A container can make a plant easier to move.
Canna Large paddle-shaped leaves, sometimes striped or bronze-toned, and summer flower spikes bring both foliage and flower color. Prefers warmth, full sun, good soil, steady water and shelter. Wind can shred its leaves and topple flower spikes. In colder UK locations, lift rhizomes after frost damages the foliage and store them frost-free; in mild regions, the RHS says roots can be protected with insulating mulch.
Hardy palms Upright, architectural form provides a strong structural accent. The RHS says some palms can survive winters in much of lowland Britain in sheltered gardens. Wet roots, exposure, container growing and young age increase risk, so treat general hardiness guidance as an indication rather than a promise for an individual garden.
Hardy ferns and hostas Lower-growing foliage layers; useful for shaded areas. Use where their light and moisture requirements suit the site. The RHS lists them as possible components of exotic-style planting; check the suitability of the particular plant locally.

Match plants to the conditions in your garden

Choose the planting position before buying, then compare plants against the conditions they will actually receive. A sheltered sunny border, an exposed garden and a shaded courtyard will not support the same combination, even if the plants look right together in a photograph.

  • Sunlight and warmth: Cannas need a warm, sunny position. Bananas also favor warmth and sun, so a cold or shaded location may be unsuitable.
  • Shelter and wind: Protect broad-leaved plants from strong wind, which can damage leaves; cannas’ flower spikes may also be knocked over. Use a naturally sheltered spot where possible.
  • Water and drainage: Bananas need soil that stays consistently moist but should not be left dry or overly wet. Avoid a position where roots remain saturated.
  • Space: Allow for mature height and spread rather than planting to the size of a young specimen. The RHS dimensions for Musa basjoo are estimates, not guaranteed results for every garden.
  • Growing and overwintering method: Decide whether a plant will live in the ground or a container. Containers can make tender plants movable, but container-grown plants face greater winter risk than plants in the ground.

These checks are especially important when comparing plants with similar visual impact: consider mature size, foliage and flowers alongside shelter, water needs and the winter work each one requires.

200Pcs Mix Caladium Seeds for Planting for Planting - Shade Loving, Heat Tolerant, Perfect for Containers & Indoor Decor
  • Caladiums are celebrated for their brilliantly colored leaves, making them an ideal choice to brighten shaded gardens, patio corners, or porch pots. Their foliage characteristics create a striking visual focal point in areas lacking full sun, suitable for landscape beautification or container viewing.
  • It is recommended to start seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last expected frost. Sow seeds shallowly in a moist, well-draining seed starting mix. Keep the medium consistently damp and provide a warm environment for germination (around 70-75°F / 21-24°C).
  • In addition to outdoor gardens, Caladiums are also well-suited for container planting to decorate balconies, patios, or bright indoor spaces. Their colorful foliage can add a touch of tropical flair to various indoor and outdoor living areas.
  • Transplant seedlings to a shaded spot in the garden or into containers once they are sturdy and outdoor temperatures are consistently warm. Choose a location with full to partial shade and ensure the soil remains moist but well-drained. Water regularly during the growing season, avoiding letting the soil dry out completely.

Plan winter care before choosing tender plants

Decide where plants will go before the first frost, not when cold weather arrives. A tropical-look scheme can mix permanent hardy planting with plants that need dry mulch, lifted rhizomes or frost-free storage. Choose tender accents only if you can provide the protection they need.

Move container plants under cover

Most bananas are tender and should be moved indoors for winter. After moving a container banana under cover, reduce watering. If a container must stay outdoors, prevent excess winter rain from saturating its soil. The RHS notes that British conditions can challenge bananas with cold, wet winters, gales and dry summers. See its guide to growing banana plants for care details.

Lift and store susceptible rhizomes

In colder UK locations, lift canna rhizomes after frost has damaged the foliage and store them in a frost-free place. Tender cannas and begonias can be lifted and stored before autumn frosts, according to RHS guidance. In mild UK regions, canna roots may instead be protected with insulating mulch.

Protect suitable plants in the ground

Some plants may stay outdoors in suitable sheltered locations, but protection needs depend on the plant and conditions. The RHS advises wrapping Musa basjoo against harsh frost. It says fleece gives about 2°C of frost protection; that is a guidance figure, not a guarantee for every plant or weather event. For palms and other plants, consider wet roots, exposure, age and whether they are growing in the ground or a container when assessing winter risk.

Make the planting plan manageable

A lush effect does not require filling the garden with plants that need specialist winter storage. Start with hardy structure suited to your site, then add a small number of tender focal plants only where you have space and a realistic overwintering plan. Before buying, check the plant’s local hardiness, mature size, sun and shelter needs, soil moisture preferences, container suitability and the time and storage space required for winter care.
