How to Make a Bending Form for Cold Wood Lamination

A reliable cold-lamination form depends on the curve, consistent strip thickness, package clearance and even clamping. Here’s how to choose and build one, then test for springback.

To make a bending form for cold lamination, build a rigid curved support that holds a stack of glue-coated wood strips in the required shape while the adhesive cures. The form may be one-sided, with cauls or vacuum pressure, or a matched two-part form that presses the laminates between inner and outer faces. Its curve, clearance and clamping setup must suit the actual wood, strip thickness and glue-up—not a universal radius rule.

Choose the laminate and form before cutting

Start with the finished part’s curve and dimensions, the wood species, and the number and thickness of strips. The thinner and more consistent the strips, the more readily the stack can follow a tight curve; brittle stock and tighter bends generally call for thinner laminates. Fine Woodworking suggests testing strips around 1/8 to 3/16 inch thick as a starting range, not a fixed specification. Make a representative test with your chosen wood and curve before committing to the final form. Fine Woodworking’s bent-lamination guidance emphasizes testing and accurate, consistent stock.

Decide whether the part needs a one-sided form or a two-part form. Consider whether the curve reverses, the part’s width, the clamps or vacuum equipment available, and whether repeat production warrants a more involved matched form. A two-part form presses from both sides and can accommodate reversing curves; a one-sided form with cauls or vacuum pressing can suit other shapes. In either case, the form must be stiff enough to resist the force required to close the laminate stack.

Build the form to match the curve

Layered MDF and template-router method

In the WOOD magazine demonstration, Senior Design Editor Kevin Boyle uses three layers of MDF, a template and router operations to make inner and outer form components. He describes cold lamination as gluing thin strips together and notes that sufficiently thin strips can follow a tight radius. He chooses MDF for its smoother bearing surface and notes that particleboard is another option. This is one documented construction method, not the only suitable one. WOOD magazine’s demonstration shows the layout and routing approach.

Designing a two-part form

A matched two-part form needs clearance for the complete bending package: the laminates and any flexible cauls. Brian Boggs’s method lays out each form face with an offset equal to half the package thickness, so the halves meet as intended with the work in place. They are not meant to fit tightly together with no laminates or cauls between them. For a large form, Boggs describes laminating MDF sheets around solid-wood ribs, making a centerline template, marking the offsets, and then cutting the profiles. Flexible cauls attached to the form can bridge minor irregularities. Fine Woodworking’s two-part form guide explains this geometry.

Keep the form practical and rigid

Whether you use layered MDF, plywood or another suitable sheet material, make the form long and wide enough to support the part and leave room to position clamps. A form that flexes under load can compromise the curve or leave uneven pressure. Canadian Woodworking describes making a form from multiple identical MDF pieces shaped from a template, with plywood as another option. Canadian Woodworking’s bent-lamination article covers that approach.

Prepare for glue-up and clamping

  • Cover surfaces that may contact squeeze-out with release tape. Demonstrations use house-wrap tape on plywood or transparent packaging tape.
  • Dry-fit the strips, cauls and clamps first. Confirm alignment, access and the clamp sequence before spreading glue; working time depends on the adhesive and the number of layers.
  • Apply glue consistently across the mating faces. A glue roller can help spread adhesive over multiple laminations.
  • Set the stack on the form and apply pressure evenly. For the illustrated two-part setup, Rockler recommends working from the center toward both ends. Bar clamps are one option for a two-part form; cauls or vacuum pressing are alternatives when the setup is designed to handle the load.

WoodWorkers Guild of America demonstrates a plywood form, release tape, a glue roller and clamp-up in its bent-lamination walkthrough. Rockler’s illustrated setup discusses two-part forms and clamping choices: Rockler’s bent-lamination guide.

Account for springback and adhesive cure

Springback is the relaxation that occurs when a formed piece is released. The amount varies with the wood, strip thickness, curve and glue-up. Rockler notes that thicker, fewer laminations tend to spring back more than a stack of many thin strips. Some methods use slight over-bending, but there is no dependable universal correction. Make a test piece, release it, compare its curve with the target, and adjust the form based on what that specific stock and setup do.
