Those are different things: software layers help manage a job, while a pocket-and-plug inlay creates a finished piece from two workpieces. Here’s how to plan both, with a practical inlay workflow and the extra registration needed for two-sided work.
What “multi-layer” means in a CNC project
In Vectric VCarve Pro, a job can contain multiple material sheets and design layers. The active sheet and layer determine where you organize current design work; they do not mean the finished object is physically stacked. See Vectric’s CNC workflow documentation.
A physical multi-material project is different. For a V-carve inlay, the machine cuts a pocket in one workpiece and a matching plug from another, then the pieces are joined. A two-sided project adds a further requirement: the stock must be aligned predictably after it is flipped.
| Approach | What is layered or separate | Main planning concern |
|---|---|---|
| Software layers and sheets | Design elements are organized in the job; the finished object need not have separate pieces. | Keep track of the active sheet and design layer. |
| Pocket-and-plug inlay | Two separately machined workpieces become one physical piece. | Match the toolpath geometry and achieve a suitable fit. |
| Two-sided machining | The same stock is machined on both faces. | Control depth and register the stock accurately after flipping. |
How to plan a CNC inlay
1. Choose the workpieces
Decide which board will hold the pocket and which material will form the plug. Contrasting wood is one way to make the inlay visible, as described in Easel’s V-Carve Inlay Application. The species, thickness, grain, and finish are project choices rather than fixed requirements.

2. Organize the design job
Set up the material sheet and use design layers to keep vectors and other project elements manageable. In Vectric, check which sheet and layer are active before placing or editing design work; these controls organize the digital job, not the physical assembly.
3. Generate pocket and plug toolpaths
Vectric’s VCarve inlay toolpath creates separate toolpath sets for the pocket and plug. Use the same V-bit geometry for both sides of that workflow, and inspect both sets after edits: once initially calculated, the two sets are no longer linked. The VCarve Inlay Toolpath documentation explains the software’s process. Confirm that the bit, software, and machine setup suit your particular job.

The machine works with a wide range of materials such as wood, acrylic, carbon fiber, as well as aluminum, copper and stainless steel, covering creative prototyping and functional parts production.
4. Allow for fit rather than assuming a perfect match
A cutter leaves a radius at internal corners, so a plug with square corners may not seat as expected. Tool and machine accuracy, material movement, corner geometry, and finish thickness can all change the result. Vectric’s VCarve documentation describes 0.001–0.01 in (0.02–0.2 mm) as common glue-gap values, while noting that the suitable gap varies by project. This is not a universal tolerance or a machine setting. Vectric’s Aspire Inlay Toolpath documentation also discusses project-dependent fit.
5. Set up, verify, and cut safely
Follow the machine maker’s setup and operating instructions, and use the safety procedures required for your equipment and workplace. The UK Health and Safety Executive’s 2014 guidance, Routers and machining centres (WIS22(rev1)), covers CNC router and machining-centre safety. Intelitek’s CNC router course outline describes an instructional sign-making sequence that includes material and tool setup, a dry run, pocketing, 3D finishing, and border operations. Treat that as a course example, not as universal feeds, speeds, or machine settings.

How to plan a two-sided CNC project
When a design requires machining both faces, decide how the stock will be located after the flip before cutting begins. Plan the cut depth and use a repeatable registration method appropriate to the machine and workpiece. A double-sided sign demonstration from the WoodWorkers Guild of America highlights depth and registration as central concerns; the specific fixture and coordinates depend on the project.
- Confirm that the stock is held securely and that the flip can be repeated in the intended orientation.
- Plan depth with the stock thickness and the operations on both faces in mind.
- Use the machine’s documented setup procedure rather than assuming a fixture or coordinate scheme will transfer between machines.
Which workflow suits the project?
Choose software layers when the goal is to keep a digital job organized. Choose an inlay when separate materials should form one physical design and you can manage fit between the pocket and plug. Choose two-sided machining when features are required on both faces and you can register the workpiece reliably after turning it over. These workflows can be combined, but each adds its own setup and verification needs.
