67 Fireplace Ideas That Look Warm, Work Safely, and Fit Real Homes

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A good fireplace idea has to do more than look warm in a photo. It has to fit the room, meet clearance requirements, vent safely if it burns fuel, protect nearby finishes and electronics, and still look good when the fire is off.

On our job sites, the best fireplace projects usually start with three decisions: what fuel type makes sense, how much construction the room can handle, and whether the fireplace is meant to be real heat, atmosphere, or both. A painted brick refresh might be a weekend-scale cosmetic project. A new gas or wood-burning fireplace can involve framing, gas piping, electrical, venting, masonry, inspections, and several trades.

For 2026 planning, a basic fireplace-unit installation can start around $2,000 to $2,500 per unit in national benchmark pricing, while many real-world remodels climb higher once finish materials, venting, gas lines, or chimney repairs enter the scope. Gas inserts commonly land around $2,000 to $5,000 installed. Recessed electric fireplace projects often run about $1,500 to $3,000 or more installed, with premium finished walls sometimes reaching $6,000. Wood-burning insert or new zero-clearance wood projects can move into the $8,000 to $12,000-plus range.

Use the 67 fireplace ideas below as a practical design menu. Each one includes a construction-minded note so you can separate easy upgrades from projects that need a licensed contractor.

Fireplace Planning Basics Before You Choose a Look

Before selecting tile, stone, shiplap, or a mantel, confirm the fireplace type and the rules around it. A masonry fireplace, factory-built gas fireplace, electric insert, and decorative nonworking firebox all have different limits.

For existing masonry fireplaces, we like to start with a chimney inspection before design work. A Level 1 inspection may be enough if the system has been regularly maintained and there are no changes planned. If the fireplace has damage, an unknown history, a new insert, or a fuel conversion, a Level 2 inspection is often the smarter starting point. The inspection can determine whether the best path is repair, gas insert, electric insert, or a sealed decorative firebox.

Masonry fireplace hearth extensions are not optional trim. Under common residential code rules, many masonry fireplaces need a hearth extension at least 16 inches in front of the opening and 8 inches beyond each side. Larger openings require larger extensions. Factory-built fireplaces follow the manufacturer’s listing, which may be stricter than a general rule.

Wood-burning appliances also carry air-quality and maintenance considerations. EPA-certified wood heaters sold in the United States must meet current federal particulate emission limits of 2.0 grams per hour when tested with crib wood or 2.5 grams per hour when tested with cord wood. Local clean-air rules may still restrict new wood-burning fireplaces or limit use on poor-air-quality days.

Fireplace Cost and Effort Comparison

The table below gives realistic planning ranges. Exact numbers depend on the unit, existing conditions, local labor, finish materials, access, and permit requirements.

Fireplace Project Type Typical 2026 Cost Range Best For Permit Likelihood
Painted brick or mantel refresh $200 to $1,500 Fast cosmetic upgrades Low, unless structural or electrical work is added
Tile or stone veneer surround $1,500 to $6,000+ Existing fireplaces needing a new finish Low to moderate, depending on scope
Plug-in electric fireplace $200 to $1,500 for many freestanding units Bedrooms, offices, condos, rentals Low
Recessed electric fireplace wall $1,500 to $3,000+ installed; premium builds can reach $6,000 No-chimney rooms and media walls Moderate if framing or new electrical is required
Gas fireplace insert About $2,000 to $5,000 installed for many projects Existing fireplaces needing efficient flames High when gas, venting, or liner work is involved
Full gas fireplace project Often $7,200 to $8,800+ with venting, fronts, surrounds, gas, and finish work Major remodels and new fireplace walls High
Wood fireplace insert Often around $8,000 fully installed Traditional heat and ambiance in an existing fireplace High
New zero-clearance wood fireplace Usually $12,000+ with chimney, chase, framing, and finish work New construction or major renovations High

Easy Cosmetic Fireplace Ideas

1. Paint tired brick matte white

Cost: $ to $$. Permit risk: low. White painted brick brightens a room fast and works well when the brick is structurally sound but visually heavy. Use masonry primer and heat-tolerant paint near the firebox. Do not paint inside an active firebox with standard wall paint.

2. Limewash red brick

Cost: $ to $$. Limewash softens brick without completely erasing texture. It is a strong choice for older homes where solid opaque paint would look too flat. Test a 2-by-2-foot area first because brick porosity changes the final color.

3. German smear or overgrouted brick

Cost: $$ to $$$. This gives brick a thicker, aged look with mortar spread across the face. It works best on real brick, not thin veneers with shallow joints. Protect the hearth and flooring because the process is messy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Add a simple floating mantel

Cost: $ to $$. A 5- to 8-inch-deep mantel shelf can give a plain fireplace useful proportion. Confirm combustible mantel clearances from the fireplace manual or local code before installing wood.

5. Swap brass doors for a black surround

Cost: $$ to $$$. Dated polished brass doors can make an otherwise solid fireplace feel old. A black steel or powder-coated door set creates a cleaner look and pairs well with brick, stone, and painted millwork.

6. Replace small tile with large-format tile

Cost: $$ to $$$. Large-format porcelain reduces grout lines and gives the surround a more current look. The substrate needs to be flat; lippage is obvious on big tile.

7. Use a single stone-look porcelain slab

Cost: $$$ to $$$$. Slabs create a high-end look without many joints. Plan edge details, seams, and anchoring early. Around heat-producing units, confirm the slab and setting materials are approved for the temperature zone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Paint the firebox black

Cost: $. For a nonworking or properly prepared masonry firebox, black high-heat paint can make the opening look clean and intentional. Active fireplaces need products rated for the expected temperature.

9. Add a hearth rug zone, not too close

Cost: $. A rug can make the seating area warmer, but maintain safe clearances from sparks, glass fronts, and heater discharge. With wood fires, use noncombustible hearth protection where required.

10. Style the opening with stacked logs

Cost: $. For a decommissioned fireplace, stacked birch or split logs add texture. Do this only after the fireplace is confirmed inactive or safely sealed against drafts and moisture.

Ideas for Existing Brick Fireplaces

11. Keep brick and add a thick wood mantel

Cost: $$ to $$$. This works when the brick has good color variation. The mantel adds weight and a place for art. Use proper anchors into masonry, not just mortar joints.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

12. Frame brick with painted built-ins

Cost: $$$ to $$$$. Built-ins can turn a brick fireplace into a full wall. Before cabinets are built, plan outlets, cable chases, return air paths, and access panels.

  • FULL-LENGTH PIANO HINGES SEAL GAPS AND PROTECT KIDS AND PETS: Full-length piano hinges run the entire height of the screen, leaving no large gaps between panels where embers could sneak through; the tight hinge fit also prevents little fingers from getting pinched when folding or adjusting; dense mesh blocks flying sparks from reaching your kids, pets or flooring; the secure barrier gives you peace of mind during family fireside evenings
  • 48 x 29 INCH SIZE WITH BLACK POWDER COATED FINISH: Measures 48 inches wide by 29 inches high, fitting most standard fireplace openings; black powder coated wrought iron resists high temperature and everyday wear near the fire; the sleek black finish coordinates with any hearth tool set and stays looking neat season after season
  • FOLDABLE 3 PANEL DESIGN WITH NO ASSEMBLY NEEDED: The three panels angle to fit your fireplace front and fold flat when not in use; arrives fully assembled so you can open it up and start using it in one minute; fold it away into a narrow corner or storage closet when the heating season ends, saving precious floor space

13. Add a raised hearth bench

Cost: $$$. A raised hearth can be 16 to 20 inches high to sit comfortably, but it must respect hearth-extension requirements and unit clearances. Use noncombustible finishes where required.

14. Whitewash only the brick face

Cost: $. Leave the firebox dark and soften only the face brick. This creates contrast without a full rebuild.

15. Cover damaged brick with tile backer and tile

Cost: $$$. If the brick is ugly but stable, a new tile surface can work. If the brick is loose, cracked, or moisture-damaged, repair comes first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

16. Use honed black granite on the hearth

Cost: $$ to $$$. Black granite hides ash better than pale stone and pairs well with old brick. Honed finishes usually look quieter than polished finishes in traditional rooms.

17. Add a cast stone surround over brick

Cost: $$$ to $$$$. Cast stone gives an older room a more formal profile. Measure opening size, projection, and hearth depth carefully so the surround does not violate clearance rules.

18. Repoint the brick instead of covering it

Cost: $$ to $$$. If the brick is handsome but the joints are crumbling, repointing may be the best investment. It is dusty, skilled work, but it preserves character.

No-Chimney Fireplace Ideas

19. Recessed electric fireplace in a new wall

Cost: $$ to $$$. Electric fireplaces are the easiest route for rooms without vent access. They still need correct framing clearances, electrical capacity, and a serviceable installation.

20. Surface-mounted electric unit

Cost: $ to $$. This is one of the fastest options for offices, apartments, and basements. Hide the cord with a code-compliant outlet location instead of running a cord through a wall.

21. Electric fireplace in a bedroom cabinet wall

Cost: $$$. A low electric insert below shelves can make a bedroom feel finished without venting. Keep bedding, drapery, and furniture away from heater discharge.

22. Corner electric fireplace

Cost: $ to $$. Corners often solve furniture layout problems in small rooms. Choose a shallow unit so it does not eat 3 feet of floor area.

23. Electric fireplace below a window seat

Cost: $$$. This can work in sunrooms or reading rooms if the unit’s heat discharge is not blocked. Keep manufacturer-required air gaps open.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

24. Linear electric fireplace in a basement

Cost: $$ to $$$. Basements often lack chimney access but usually have wall space. Check circuit capacity; many units need a dedicated circuit for full heat output.

25. Decorative flame-only unit

Cost: $ to $$. If the room already has HVAC heat, a flame-only electric unit can provide atmosphere with lower electrical load.

26. Freestanding electric stove

Cost: $ to $$. These work well in cottages, offices, and guest rooms. They are easier to move than built-ins and avoid finish carpentry costs.

Gas Fireplace Ideas

27. Gas insert in an old masonry fireplace

Cost: $$ to $$$. A gas insert is a practical middle ground for homeowners who want real flame, zone heat, remote control, and less maintenance than wood. Plan for gas piping, electrical power, venting, and possibly a chimney liner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

28. Modern linear gas fireplace

Cost: $$$ to $$$$. Linear units look best when the fireplace is wide and low. This often helps keep a TV lower than a traditional tall firebox would allow.

29. Traditional gas fireplace with logs

Cost: $$$. This gives a familiar wood-fire appearance without hauling wood or cleaning ash. Use the log set and media approved by the unit manufacturer.

31. Gas fireplace with herringbone liner

Cost: $$$. Ceramic or refractory herringbone panels add traditional detail without a full masonry firebox.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

32. See-through gas fireplace

Cost: $$$$. Two-sided fireplaces can divide a living room and dining area, but they need careful framing, vent routing, and furniture planning on both sides.

33. Peninsula fireplace

Cost: $$$$. A three-sided gas fireplace makes sense in open plans where one wall needs to define zones. Confirm glass temperature, traffic paths, and furniture clearance.

34. Gas fireplace with a stone bench hearth

Cost: $$$$. A bench hearth adds useful seating and visual weight. Use stone, concrete, tile, or another approved noncombustible material within the required zone.

Wood-Burning Fireplace Ideas

35. Restore an original masonry fireplace

Cost: $$$ to $$$$. Restoration can include repointing, damper repair, smoke chamber parging, flue liner work, or hearth correction. Start with inspection before finishes.

36. Add an EPA-certified wood insert

Cost: $$$$. A wood insert can improve heat performance compared with an open fireplace. Expect a larger project when liner work, hearth extension, and surround panels are included.

37. Freestanding wood stove on a raised pad

Cost: $$$ to $$$$. This can heat strongly, but clearances to walls, ceilings, furniture, and combustibles are critical. Follow the stove listing exactly.

38. Rustic stone wood fireplace

Cost: $$$$. Real masonry and full-depth stone are heavy and expensive. Confirm foundation support, chimney path, and local wood-burning rules before committing.

39. Outdoor wood-burning fireplace

Cost: $$$$. Outdoor wood fireplaces need wind planning, spark control, drainage, freeze-thaw durable materials, and local fire-rule compliance.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

40. Wood storage niche beside the hearth

Cost: $$ to $$$. Built-in wood storage looks great, but do not crowd the firebox opening. Keep kindling, logs, and baskets outside required clearances.

Fireplace TV Wall Ideas

41. Lower linear fireplace with TV above

Cost: $$$ to $$$$. A low linear unit helps reduce neck strain. Tape the TV outline on the wall and check viewing height from the sofa before framing.

42. Offset TV beside the fireplace

Cost: $$ to $$$$. This is often more comfortable than stacking the TV over the mantel. It also reduces heat exposure and allows better art or mantel styling.

43. Recessed TV niche with heat deflector mantel

Cost: $$$$. Some gas fireplaces allow a TV above only with a mantel, recess, or heat management kit. Use the appliance manual, not guesswork.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

44. Fireplace centered, TV hidden behind cabinet doors

Cost: $$$$. This works in formal living rooms where the fireplace should remain primary. Plan ventilation for electronics and easy service access.

45. Media wall with electric fireplace

Cost: $$$. Electric fireplaces simplify venting and heat management, but the wall still needs outlets, blocking, cable paths, and proper framing.

46. Stone fireplace wall with side TV panel

Cost: $$$$. Use stone or porcelain behind the fireplace and a smoother painted or wood panel behind the TV. This keeps the TV mount flatter and cleaner.

When to DIY and When to Hire a Pro

DIY can make sense for low-risk cosmetic work: painting exterior brick, changing decor, installing a freestanding plug-in electric stove, replacing a nonstructural mantel shelf, or styling a nonworking firebox. Even then, use the right products and avoid covering vents, cleanouts, dampers, or access panels.

Hire a pro when the project touches combustion, structure, venting, gas, hardwired electrical, chimney liners, hearth extensions, or fireplace clearances. That includes gas inserts, new gas fireplaces, wood inserts, zero-clearance fireplaces, recessed electric fireplaces with new wiring, TV/fireplace walls, and built-ins around active units.

A practical timeline for a simple cosmetic refresh may be 1 to 3 days. A tile or stone surround can take 3 to 7 working days depending on demolition, substrate prep, and cure times. A gas insert is often a 1- to 3-day field installation after product lead time and permitting. A new fireplace wall with framing, utilities, finish work, and inspection can take 2 to 6 weeks depending on scope.

Contractor Notes That Prevent Expensive Mistakes

Keep the appliance manual in the project file. Inspectors, future service technicians, and buyers may need the exact model requirements for clearances, venting, hearth dimensions, and approved finish materials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume stone makes everything safe. Noncombustible finish material does not fix improper framing, blocked ventilation, overheated electronics, or an undersized hearth. The unit listing controls the assembly.

Plan the off-season look. A fireplace wall is visible all year. The best designs have balanced proportions, practical storage, clean cable management, and finishes that look intentional even without flame.

For families with children or pets, consider safety screens, rounded hearth edges, furniture spacing, and cool-touch electric options. Glass fronts on many gas fireplaces get very hot during operation and stay hot after the flame is off.

Finally, price the hidden work early. Gas lines, dedicated electrical circuits, chimney liners, masonry repairs, framing changes, roof penetrations, and finish carpentry can cost more than the visible surround. A fireplace is part design feature, part mechanical system. Treating it as both is how you get a room that feels warm, works correctly, and holds up.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the most affordable fireplace idea?

The lowest-cost ideas are usually painting brick, limewashing, adding a simple mantel shelf, restyling a nonworking firebox, or using a freestanding electric fireplace. Many cosmetic updates fall between $200 and $1,500 depending on materials and labor.

What fireplace is best for a room without a chimney?

An electric fireplace is usually the easiest option for a room without a chimney because it does not need a flue or gas line. Recessed electric fireplaces still need proper framing, electrical capacity, and clearances from the unit manual.

How much does a gas fireplace insert cost in 2026?

Many gas fireplace inserts cost about $2,000 to $5,000 installed, but complete projects can run higher when they include gas piping, electrical work, venting, surround materials, chimney liner work, or firebox repairs.

Can I mount a TV above a fireplace?

Sometimes, but the layout has to be checked for heat and viewing height. Use the fireplace manufacturer’s manual for mantel, recess, and heat-management requirements, and mock up the TV height from the main seating position before framing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do fireplace remodels require permits?

Cosmetic work such as paint or surface tile may not require a permit, but gas lines, venting, chimney liners, new fireplace units, structural framing, hardwired electrical, and hearth changes often do. Local rules vary, so confirm before work starts.

Are wood-burning fireplaces still a good idea?

They can be, especially for homeowners who value traditional flame, sound, and strong ambiance. They also require the most maintenance, chimney care, clearance planning, and local air-quality review. In some areas, new wood-burning fireplaces are restricted.
