Qué necesita para crecer bien
Esta planta perenne tropical crece en grupos y se reconoce por sus hojas verticales, carnosas y puntiagudas. Hay cultivares de distintos tamaños, patrones y colores, así que el aspecto puede variar. Aunque tolera lugares con poca luz, no la dejes en oscuridad completa: una ubicación más luminosa suele favorecer el crecimiento.
- Luz: elige luz indirecta brillante o sol parcial. Puede adaptarse a distintas exposiciones, pero protégela del sol intenso de la tarde.
- Sustrato: usa una mezcla que drene con facilidad, como una formulada para cactus y suculentas. Evita que las raíces permanezcan en tierra empapada.
- Maceta: elige un recipiente con orificios de drenaje. Una maceta algo más ancha puede ayudar a estabilizar las hojas altas y estrechas.
- Temperatura: mantenla en condiciones domésticas cálidas. La Royal Horticultural Society recomienda 15–24 °C y mantenerla por encima de 10 °C; la Universidad de Connecticut aconseja evitar temperaturas inferiores a 55 °F (unos 13 °C). Son pautas de cultivo de esas fuentes, no un umbral universal establecido por una prueba experimental.
La Royal Horticultural Society recomienda compost de drenaje libre y describe un rango amplio de luz, desde pleno sol hasta sombra ligera. Para una planta en exterior durante el verano, UF/IFAS aconseja una ubicación sombreada y protección frente al sol fuerte de la tarde. En su zona de Florida, UF/IFAS también advierte de su potencial invasor en el paisaje y recomienda mantenerla en maceta; esa cautela no debe extrapolarse automáticamente a otros lugares.
¿Cada cuánto se riega una sansevieria?
Riega cuando el sustrato se haya secado; no uses un calendario fijo como regla. El tiempo que tarda en secarse cambia según la estación, la luz, el tamaño de la maceta y la mezcla de cultivo. Si el sustrato sigue húmedo, espera antes de volver a regar y no dejes agua acumulada en el plato o recipiente exterior.

Reduce el riego en otoño e invierno, cuando suele crecer más despacio y la tierra puede tardar más en secarse. Las recomendaciones publicadas varían: NC State indica que en invierno se puede espaciar el riego a cada uno o dos meses; Arkansas señala que una vez al mes puede bastar para una planta de interior de crecimiento lento, y UConn ofrece una orientación mensual para invierno. No son intervalos universales: comprueba primero la humedad del sustrato.

El exceso de agua puede provocar pudrición de raíces. Si las hojas se ablandan o notas raíces deterioradas, comprueba primero si la tierra permanece mojada. La Universidad de Connecticut resume la precaución así: “Overwatering is the quickest way to kill any houseplant, but especially so with these.” La frase es del Dr. Matthew Lisy, profesor adjunto de esa universidad.

Cómo propagarla
Se puede multiplicar por división de la mata o mediante esquejes de hoja, métodos descritos por Iowa State University Extension y la Universidad de Connecticut.
- División: separa una sección de la mata procurando que conserve raíces y plántala en una maceta con mezcla de buen drenaje.
- Esqueje de hoja: corta una hoja y prepara esquejes para enraizar. Este método permite propagarla, aunque las plantas resultantes pueden no conservar el patrón de color de algunos cultivares.
Cuidados y problemas habituales
Polvo en las hojas
Las hojas planas pueden acumular polvo. Retíralo con cuidado con un paño o enjuágalas al aire libre cuando el tiempo sea cálido.

NC State recomienda vigilar cochinillas y araña roja, aunque no considera habituales los problemas significativos de plagas en esta especie.
Perros, gatos y personas
UF/IFAS clasifica la planta como venenosa para perros y gatos y de baja severidad para las personas. Mantenla donde las mascotas no puedan mordisquearla y consulta a un profesional sanitario o veterinario si se produce una ingestión y necesitas orientación.
