An old wooden ladder can become a vertical garden display for potted herbs, bringing greenery into a small corner or near an outdoor cooking area. Choose a sound, stable ladder, plan for drainage and watering, and treat the display as garden decor—not as a ladder for climbing.
How to use an old ladder in your garden
The Royal Horticultural Society describes a rustic reclaimed wooden ladder paired with pale terracotta pots of scented herbs in a cottage-garden setting. Its suggested locations—a garden corner or a spot near outdoor cooking—make the idea useful where ground space is limited. RHS: Ideas for growing veg in small spaces.
Rosemary, basil, thyme and lime mint are among the herbs the RHS names for this display. Arrange pots on the rungs or steps, keeping them accessible for watering and harvesting. A restrained palette of containers and plants can help the ladder read as one deliberate garden feature rather than a collection of unrelated pots.
Choose a location and make the display stable
Set the ladder on a level, firm spot where you can reach the plants without moving the display. Iowa State University Extension notes that a level site simplifies planter construction and recommends placing planters conveniently for maintenance and harvest. Iowa State Extension: Raised bed basics.

Account for the weight of the pots and their contents, especially when wet. University of Vermont Extension advises that containers holding plant supports should be heavy enough to resist toppling and deep enough to hold support legs securely. That guidance offers a useful stability principle for a ladder display, but it is not a tested load rating for any particular ladder or arrangement. Use containers that drain well
Choose pots intended for planting and make sure excess water can escape. The University of Maryland Extension recommends ample container drainage and cautions that adding gravel beneath potting soil can create a perched water table, leaving soil too wet. Consider where watering runoff will go, particularly on a patio or beside a wall. Leave enough room to water each pot without having to reach awkwardly across the ladder.
Pick a ladder, planter or tiered stand
There are three practical routes: reuse a sound ladder, build a purpose-made ladder planter, or buy a tiered plant stand. The RHS supports the reclaimed-ladder-and-pots concept, while Ana White provides a DIY plan for a two-tier cedar planter. For any option, compare the available floor space and height with the number and size of pots you want to use. A ladder that looks right empty may be harder to water or less stable once loaded.

Illinois Extension identifies a painted ladder as one way to add color as a garden structure. For wood refinishing, its guidance is to let the wood dry, scrape and clean it, sand it, then prime before applying a finish. It also warns against highly toxic materials that may damage plants. Choose a finish appropriate for the ladder’s exposure and keep the intended use in mind: a decorative coating does not make a ladder suitable or safe for climbing. The cedar DIY plan also advises selecting lumber and a finish rated for the local climate. Ana White: Cedar ladder planter.
Make the ladder fit the garden
Before choosing a paint color or plants, consider the home’s architecture, neighborhood character, the effect you want, and how you use the outdoor space. Those are planning factors recommended by University of Wisconsin Extension. University of Wisconsin Extension: Landscape design.

Keep the placement practical as well as attractive, with access for routine care and enough clearance around paths and outdoor cooking areas.
Keep decorative use separate from climbing
A ladder carrying pots is a garden display, not automatically safe climbing equipment. Do not climb it to prune, reach a roof or perform other work. Guidance from the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety for ladders used as climbing equipment includes setting them on firm, level ground and inspecting them; those work-ladder precautions do not certify a decorated ladder as safe to climb.
