For washable rubber, start with detergent and water: scrub the visible mold, then dry the item completely. Check the item’s care instructions first, especially for an appliance gasket. “Black mold” describes a dark appearance; it does not identify a mold species, and CDC says you do not need to identify the type before taking cleanup action.
How to clean mold from a rubber item
- Check the instructions. Follow the item’s care directions. For an assembled appliance part, look for the manufacturer’s cleaning procedure for that exact model.
- Wash the surface. For a hard, washable surface, scrub visible mold with detergent and water. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends this method for mold on hard surfaces: EPA basic mold cleanup steps. A soft brush can help reach textured areas, but the source does not specify a brush type or test this method on every rubber compound.
- Rinse if directed, then dry fully. Follow care instructions about rinsing and make sure the rubber is completely dry before returning it to use or storage. EPA identifies moisture control as central to mold control.
- Address the moisture. Improve drying or storage conditions and correct the source of persistent dampness. Otherwise, growth may return.
Cleaning may not remove discoloration: EPA notes that mold can stain or cause cosmetic damage. If the rubber remains visibly damaged, mold persists in crevices you cannot reach, or the item cannot be cleaned as directed, ask the manufacturer for model-specific advice or consider replacement. The cited guidance does not establish a rubber-specific replacement threshold.
Should you use bleach on rubber?
Agency guidance differs on bleach for household mold cleanup. CDC says bleach or dish detergent can be used; if using bleach, use no more than 1 cup per 1 gallon of water, ventilate the area, and never mix bleach with ammonia or any other cleanser. See CDC mold cleanup guidelines.
EPA does not recommend biocides such as chlorine bleach as a routine mold-cleanup practice. Dead mold still needs to be removed because it may cause allergic reactions. For rubber of unknown composition, detergent and water is the more conservative general starting point supported by EPA’s hard-surface guidance. Neither agency establishes that bleach is safe for every rubber formulation or required to clean it. Use bleach only if the item’s manufacturer permits it, and follow both the manufacturer’s directions and the product label. Never mix cleaning products.

Protect yourself while cleaning
CDC recommends gloves, protective goggles, and at least a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator for mold cleanup. Open windows or doors to bring in fresh air when using cleaning products. People with allergies, immune suppression, underlying lung disease, asthma, or COPD should not take part in cleanup because they may face more significant health effects. See CDC mold information.
If the mold is part of a larger building problem, follows extensive water damage or sewage contamination, or cannot be reached safely, treat it as more than a simple item-cleaning task and seek professional or public-health guidance. EPA says specialists may be appropriate if an item is expensive or sentimental, or if you are unsure how to clean it; see EPA mold cleanup in your home.

What the guidance does—and does not—establish
The available agency directions cover mold cleanup on hard surfaces generally; they do not test a rubber-specific removal method or identify a cleaner safe for every type of rubber. Rubber compounds and item-care requirements can differ, so manufacturer guidance matters when the material or construction is uncertain. A dark stain alone also cannot establish the mold species.
