The knock-down design can also be dismantled for storage. The plan gives a specific router setup and overall furniture dimensions, but it does not establish that a completed build has been tested or certified to current safety requirements.
How the convertible design works
The plan uses a lower “toddler panel” in place of one crib panel. Its opening is intended to let a child get in and out while helping prevent the child from rolling out; that is the design’s stated intent, not a guarantee of safety. Knock-down fasteners allow the furniture to be dismantled for storage.
WOOD magazine lists the assembled dimensions as 53 3/4 inches wide × 29 3/4 inches deep × 33 1/2 inches high. These are the outside dimensions of the furniture, not the mattress dimensions. The page credits Craig Ruegsegger as author and Kevin Boyle as Senior Design Editor, and says it was updated April 28, 2025.
Materials, hardware and routing details
The instructions call for plywood panels, knock-down fasteners, router-cut slots and drilled holes. They also call for purpose-made routing and drilling jigs. Follow the plan’s drawings and dimensions for the panel layout, hole locations and hardware placement; the available description does not provide enough detail to reproduce those dimensions independently.

Router setup specified by the plan
For the slot-routing operation, the plan specifies a 1/2-inch outside-diameter guide bushing and a 3/8-inch upcut spiral router bit. Confirm that the bit and guide bushing are compatible with your router and follow the complete plan instructions for the jig and cut. The specified bit type and diameter do not establish a particular brand, shank size or tested setup.
Dimensions and U.S. safety context
The furniture envelope, the mattress dimensions and the regulatory requirements describe different things. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) identifies a full-size crib by its interior dimensions; its toddler-bed guidance defines the intended mattress size and user limits. Neither can be verified just by comparing the plan’s outside dimensions.

For full-size cribs manufactured or imported after October 28, 2019, CPSC identifies ASTM F1169-19 as the accepted edition. Its guidance addresses several areas, including slat construction and spacing, hardware and fasteners, openings, mattress-support structure and performance tests. For toddler beds manufactured or imported on or after January 27, 2020, CPSC lists ASTM F1821-19e1 as the accepted mandatory version; listed requirements include openings, guardrails, mattress support and retention, end structures and side rails, and slat strength.

The plan says completed crib openings must be no more than 2 3/8 inches wide. That is one dimensional instruction. It is not evidence that the design, or a particular build, has passed all required tests or meets every current crib and toddler-bed requirement.

The reviewed WOOD magazine page does not document third-party testing, certification or a safety evaluation of the plan or of an individual build. ASTM F1821-19e2 describes toddler-bed design, performance, labels and instructions; its scope says it is intended to minimize incidents during normal use and reasonably foreseeable misuse, and does not address incidents caused by alteration or unreasonable misuse. CPSC guidance says manufacturers and importers of children’s products subject to applicable requirements must issue a Children’s Product Certificate. That general guidance does not determine the legal classification of a particular DIY build.

What to verify before relying on a build
- Use the plan’s complete drawings and instructions for the panel geometry, jigs, fasteners, slots and drilled holes rather than inferring missing measurements from the overall dimensions.
- Verify mattress fit and the relevant opening, guardrail, support and retention details against applicable requirements; a visual resemblance to a compliant product is not proof of compliance.
- Do not treat the plan’s opening-width limit, the stated overall dimensions or the existence of a toddler conversion panel as proof that a finished crib or bed is certified or safe.
- If you are comparing this DIY design with a manufactured product or another plan, compare documented mattress fit, opening and guardrail geometry, structural and mattress-support testing, the applicable standard edition, and available required testing or certification documentation.
