A secure, labeled, well-planned storage area can also help prevent accidental exposure, contamination, and spills.
1. Follow each pesticide’s label
Read the storage directions on every pesticide label and keep them available with the product. EPA notes that labels include specific storage and disposal instructions for both the pesticide and its container. Its general guidance is a starting point, not a substitute for product-specific directions. See the EPA’s pesticide storage guidance and check the current label for each product.
2. Secure products and restrict access
Store pesticides where children and pets cannot reach them. Where possible, use a locked cabinet or a secure storage area such as a suitable shed or utility area. EPA’s label manual includes examples of label language calling for locked, secure storage and precautionary signs. Choose an arrangement that fits the products’ labels and applicable state and local requirements; a lockable cabinet is one option to evaluate, not a universal specification.
3. Keep products in their original labeled containers
Keep each pesticide in its original container with its label intact. The label identifies the product and provides directions, ingredients, and first-aid information. Never put pesticide into a soft-drink bottle or another container that could be mistaken for food or a beverage. If a container is damaged or its label is unreadable, do not guess at its contents or handling instructions; seek safe-disposal advice.

4. Separate pesticides from food and protect water
Keep pesticides away from food, animal feed, and medical supplies. EPA’s example storage statements also identify pet food, seed, fertilizers, and veterinary supplies as items to keep separate. Plan the location so a leak or spill is unlikely to reach a well, drain, groundwater, or surface water, and avoid flood-prone areas. Use the product label and farm procedures to determine the appropriate separation and containment measures.
5. Maintain suitable conditions and prepare for spills
EPA’s example storage statements describe dry, well-lit, ventilated, clean storage, protection from extreme heat and cold, and keeping a spill kit and fire extinguisher nearby with emergency phone numbers posted. These are examples, not rules that suit every product: follow the directions on the label and applicable requirements when deciding what conditions and equipment are appropriate. A spill kit’s contents should be suitable for the pesticides kept in the area.

Arrange and manage the storage area
Use separation practices as product-specific examples
EPA’s label manual gives examples such as placing liquid formulations on lower shelves and dry formulations above them, and keeping herbicides, insecticides, and fungicides in separate areas. Treat these as arrangements to evaluate—not universal requirements—and confirm that they fit the products’ labels and farm procedures. The manual cautions that some example statements may not be appropriate for all pesticide products. See the EPA Office of Pesticide Programs’ OPP Label Review Manual, Attachment B.
Buy only what you expect to use soon
Avoid stockpiling; EPA advises buying only the amount needed soon. There is no single shelf-life period or farm-wide quantity limit established by this guidance. If you cannot identify a container or determine how old its contents are, follow safe-disposal advice rather than assuming it remains usable.
