Lance-leaf coreopsis (*Coreopsis lanceolata*) is a clump-forming perennial that grows best in full sun and well-drained soil. Establish it from shallow-sown seed or by dividing an existing clump. The right planting dates, bloom period, and plant size depend on your region and the seed or plant’s origin.

How to identify lance-leaf coreopsis

This perennial in the daisy family has yellow, daisy-like flower heads on upright stems. Its foliage is concentrated near the base, with a few pairs of opposite leaves on the lower part of the stem. USDA NRCS describes the basal leaves as divided and the upper leaves as oval and entire; leaves may also be somewhat hairy. The flower rays have toothed tips.

In the Appalachian regional guide, plants are reported at 1–3 feet tall. That is a regional description, not a guaranteed height for every ecotype or growing condition. USDA NRCS places the species across the eastern and midwestern United States, but a broad range does not establish whether a particular seed source is native or suitable for a specific local restoration. Check state or regional native-plant guidance before choosing seed for naturalized plantings.

Where to plant it

Choose a sunny site with well-drained soil. The species tolerates light shade, but USDA NRCS notes that heavy shade can result in fewer flowers and taller stems. It grows in many soil types and naturally occurs on dry, often infertile sites; it is not a good choice for persistently wet ground. NC State Extension identifies moist, poorly drained soil as a crown-rot risk.

How to sow seed

For field establishment, USDA NRCS recommends a firm seedbed and sowing seed from the surface to 1/8 inch deep. Its rate is 5–7 grams per 100 square feet (5–7 pounds per acre) in the context of its planting guidance, in a fact sheet edited in 2006. These are restoration-style specifications; a home gardener can focus on firm seed-to-soil contact and only a very light covering rather than using field equipment.

  1. Clear the planting area and prepare a firm, relatively bare surface.
  2. Sow the seed on the surface or cover it no deeper than 1/8 inch.
  3. Press or lightly firm the soil to improve seed contact. Avoid burying seed under a thick layer of plant residue, which can interfere with germination.

Planting dates vary by location. For Florida, UF/IFAS recommends direct seeding from October through January and occasional irrigation during abnormally dry winters. That calendar is Florida-specific; use local extension advice for other regions rather than applying those months everywhere.

How to propagate an existing plant

Division is another documented way to propagate lance-leaf coreopsis. UF/IFAS recommends dividing in late winter or early spring in the Florida context. Seed collection and storage require attention because ripe seedheads shatter readily.

  • Collect seed soon after it ripens.
  • Dry it in a thin layer on newspaper.
  • If planting later, store it in a paper bag in the refrigerator.

Both seed and division are established propagation options, but the available guidance does not compare their cost, availability, or success rates. For restoration or a large naturalized planting, consider whether seed or plants with suitable local provenance are available. When buying, check that the packet or plant is identified as *Coreopsis lanceolata* and ask about seed origin. UF/IFAS notes that Florida-ecotype plants may be found at nurseries or garden centers specializing in Florida native plants; that does not establish availability in other regions.

Care, mowing, and flowering

USDA NRCS advises delaying the first mowing until after seed set in its management guidance. It also says the species tolerates regular summer and fall mowing and may flower sporadically after regrowth from the first cut. Its fertilizer recommendation is to follow soil-test results; this is management guidance, not a reason to assume every garden planting needs fertilizer.

Bloom dates depend on region and conditions. The USDA NRCS species fact sheet gives April–June, while its Appalachian regional guide gives May–August. These differing windows show why local extension or regional native-plant guidance is more useful than a single promised bloom calendar. Plant size can also vary: UF/IFAS notes that Florida ecotype plants may be much smaller than common garden forms.

Pollinators and other wildlife

Reported flower visitors include honey bees, native bees, beetles, and butterflies. The Appalachian guide specifically names bumble bees, small carpenter bees, and leafcutter bees among native visitors. NC State Extension also notes that the seeds provide food for birds. These observations support planting the species as part of a wildlife-friendly garden, but they do not establish a quantified pollinator benefit.
