March is not a universal lawn-care start date. What makes sense depends on your region, grass type, soil condition, and whether the lawn has resumed active growth. Use local Extension guidance and the lawn’s actual condition—not the calendar alone—to decide what to do.
What should you do to your lawn in March?
Think of March as a time to assess and prepare, not a month when every lawn needs the same treatments. The University of Maryland Extension recommends basing care for a mixed-species lawn on its dominant grass. Regional calendars also differ: guidance from Illinois, Iowa, and Wisconsin reflects local climates and should not be treated as a national schedule.
- Inspect and tidy: After snow has melted, clear leaves, sticks, and other debris when the ground is firm enough to walk on without causing damage. Iowa State’s spring guidance places cleanup in late March or early April in its context. Avoid working on saturated or soft soil.
- Check what the lawn needs: Look for active growth, bare patches, weeds, and signs of compaction. An early spring soil test can help determine nutrient needs; Iowa State Extension recommends testing rather than guessing.
- Prepare equipment: Iowa State advises sharpening the mower blade at the start of the growing season. A dull blade tears grass instead of cutting it cleanly.
For exact cleanup and maintenance timing, check your state or local Extension service. Warm-season and cool-season grasses do not necessarily follow the same schedule.
When should you start mowing your lawn?
Begin mowing when the grass is actively growing, tall enough to cut, and the ground is firm. Avoid mowing wet or soft ground, which can lead to ruts and damage. Do not scalp the lawn to remove winter-browned growth.

For Illinois lawns, University of Illinois Extension’s 2026 guidance recommends keeping many cool-season grasses at 2–3 inches; some turf-type tall fescue lawns do better at 3–4 inches. Those figures are regional guidance, not universal heights for every grass species. Follow local recommendations for your turf type and avoid removing too much leaf growth in a single cut.
When should you apply crabgrass preventer?
Time crabgrass prevention by soil temperature, not a fixed March date. University of Illinois Extension says crabgrass germinates when soil temperatures remain above 55–60°F for several consecutive days. Its 2021 spring guidance specifies a minimum soil temperature in that range for seven consecutive days and notes that soil and air temperatures differ. These are Illinois Extension cues, not a guarantee of timing in every region.

Check local soil-temperature information and your product’s label before applying. The label governs how and when a particular product may be used. If you plan to seed, check whether the preventer will also stop desired grass seed from germinating; Iowa State Extension warns that preemergence herbicides can interfere with turf seed.
When should you sow or overseed grass?
For cool-season lawns, fall is often the preferred time to establish grass. University of Illinois Extension identifies late summer as the best period in its context and advises completing necessary spring establishment by mid-April there. Spring seeding can still be an option for a specific bare area, but it may face weed competition and stress. Iowa State and the University of Minnesota Extension both caution about spring competition from weeds.

Before seeding, confirm that the seed suits your region and existing turf. Do not combine seeding with a preemergence treatment unless the product label and local advice confirm that the combination is compatible. If you are repairing a small patch, follow the seed supplier’s instructions for soil preparation, watering, and establishment.
When should you start fertilizing your lawn?
Do not assume a lawn needs fertilizer in early March. Nutrient needs vary with grass type, location, soil, and local rules. Start with a soil test; Iowa State Extension says an early spring test can indicate what your yard needs.

Timing differs by region. University of Illinois Extension advises waiting until mid-May in its context rather than fertilizing early in the season. Wisconsin Extension recommends waiting until grass resumes growth and mowing has resumed. Use the recommendation for your location and follow any applicable local nutrient restrictions; do not choose a fertilizer formula without a sound basis for the application.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you aerate in March?
Aerate only when you have a reason, such as compacted soil—not simply because it is March. Core aeration removes plugs of soil; Iowa State Extension identifies it as useful for compaction and gives April and September as good windows for Kentucky bluegrass and other cool-season lawns in Iowa. The University of Minnesota Extension cautions that spring aeration can stress turf and encourage weeds unless compaction is severe.

If aeration is warranted, check the locally recommended timing and ground conditions. Iowa State notes that core aerators can be rented. The choice between renting equipment and hiring a service depends on the size of the lawn, access to equipment, and your comfort operating it.
How much should you water in March?
Do not water by a fixed March schedule. Rainfall, soil, grass species, active growth, and local watering restrictions all affect what a lawn needs. Iowa State Extension gives about one inch of water per week as general guidance for active turf growth in Iowa, not as a nationwide March requirement. Check local recommendations and account for rainfall before irrigating.
Can you do all these tasks at once?
Usually, no. Mowing, seeding, fertilizing, aerating, and crabgrass prevention have different triggers, and some treatments conflict. For example, preemergence herbicides can prevent desired seed from germinating. University of Illinois Extension’s Christopher Enroth notes that “Combined products of convenience, such as spring weed and feed for lawns, typically sacrifice ideal timing for either task.” Choose each task based on the lawn’s need, local timing, and the product label rather than bundling treatments for convenience.
Quick Recap
A practical March decision sequence
- Check the ground: Wait until it is no longer saturated or soft before walking or working on the lawn.
- Identify the grass and current growth: Use the dominant grass type in a mixed lawn and local Extension advice to guide timing.
- Address only demonstrated needs: Clear debris, mow when growth and ground conditions allow, and use a soil test to inform nutrient decisions.
- Check timing before treatments: Use local soil-temperature information for crabgrass preventer and verify that herbicide timing will not conflict with planned seeding.
- Follow local and product guidance: Regional recommendations and product-label directions take precedence over a generic March calendar.
