Neither a traditional wooden humidor nor a digital cabinet is automatically better. A Spanish cedar desktop humidor can suit a smaller collection if you are willing to season it and monitor conditions. A powered cabinet is often the more practical fit for a larger collection, a warm or dry room, or someone who wants active temperature controls and less manual adjustment. Choose by usable space, climate needs, setup and upkeep, and the specific model’s construction and controls—not its format alone.
How the two formats work
Traditional wooden humidors
A traditional desktop humidor is a sealed wooden box that relies on passive humidification rather than powered climate controls. Spanish cedar absorbs and releases moisture gradually, helping buffer interior changes when the lid is opened, according to retailer Cigar Inc.’s buying guide. A new cedar interior needs preparation before cigars go inside; the guide recommends seasoning it for two to three days, using a calibrated humidity pack or a shallow dish of distilled water. That is retailer guidance, not a controlled performance test.
Digital or electric cabinets
An electric humidor adds powered controls, but the feature set varies by model. Newair lists its NCH250SS00 as a 250-count electronic humidor with digital temperature controls, a humidity display, and a stated temperature range of 52–74°F. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent performance findings (Newair product page).
Liebherr describes a 39-litre cabinet with Spanish cedar shelves, touch electronics, humidity sensors, three separately controlled circuits, and four fans. The listed model’s features are likewise manufacturer claims, not a head-to-head evaluation (Liebherr humidor page).

Which format suits your collection?
Choose a traditional desktop humidor when
- Your collection is modest and fits comfortably in the usable interior, including any boxes you plan to store.
- You are prepared to season a new humidor and check humidity rather than expecting the box to manage itself.
- You prefer a non-powered unit and do not need active temperature control.
Consider an electric cabinet when
- You need more room for a larger collection or for boxes that take up more space than loose cigars.
- Your storage location is warm or dry, or active temperature control is important to you.
- You value powered controls and displays that can reduce manual adjustment, while recognizing that features differ by model.
Cigar Inc. describes passive desktop humidors as adequate below roughly 150 cigars and electric cabinets as an option for larger collections or dry settings. Treat that figure as the retailer’s rule of thumb, not an industry standard. Nominal counts are not a fit guarantee: check shelf dimensions and the space required for boxes, dividers, and the shapes of your cigars before buying.
Humidity and temperature: follow the model’s guidance, not a universal number
The sources give different storage targets, so there is no single figure here that can be presented as universal. Cigar Inc. suggests about 65–70% relative humidity and 65–70°F, emphasizing steady conditions. Liebherr recommends 68–75% relative humidity and +16–20°C, noting that too little humidity dries cigars while excessive humidity risks mould. These are source-specific recommendations, not a single agreed standard (Cigar Inc.; Liebherr).

Whichever format you choose, assess whether it can maintain steady conditions where it will sit. A humidity display, sensor, or control panel is useful only as part of the particular product’s system; the available product pages do not establish that one format preserves cigars better in all circumstances.
Setup, maintenance, and placement
Before loading cigars
- For a new wooden humidor, follow the maker’s setup instructions. Cigar Inc.’s guide recommends seasoning cedar for two to three days before use.
- Use a calibrated digital hygrometer to monitor conditions if your setup requires separate measurement. Humidity packs can support setup or ongoing humidity control, but they do not correct a poor seal or replace choosing a suitable storage format.
- For an electric model, confirm its required location, power needs, control range, and the room conditions covered by its instructions. A powered unit depends on electricity; a passive wooden box does not require powered controls.
When adding cigars
Habanos S.A. advises allowing new cigars a few days to acclimatize and suggests using a tray to separate new arrivals from existing stock. It warns against using a refrigerator: its dry conditions can affect cigars, which also absorb surrounding smells. Prolonged dryness can cause lasting flavor loss, while prolonged wetness can rot tobacco (Habanos S.A. storage guidance).

For cigars that have become dry, Habanos S.A. advises gradual re-humidification: “When re-humidifying dry cigars do it gently in stages or you will risk the wrappers bursting as the leaves absorb moisture.”
