The answer depends on what is inside and why you are considering ventilation. An ordinary storage closet has no universal vent requirement established by the guidance cited here; a closet enclosing equipment may have specific airflow requirements. For a closet with a heat pump water heater, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the equipment-specific guidance below.
Does an ordinary storage closet need a vent?
The sources cited here do not establish a general rule that every storage closet needs a vent. If you are asking because a closet smells musty or feels damp, adding a grille may not address the cause. Look for moisture sources and conditions, including leaks, wet items, condensation, or broader indoor humidity problems.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency explains that excess moisture can contribute to mold, mildew, and other biological growth. Moisture control and appropriate ventilation can both matter; a closet vent by itself is not a diagnosis or a guaranteed mold remedy. See the EPA’s guidance on addressing indoor environmental concerns during remodeling.
What if the closet contains mechanical equipment?
A mechanical closet is different from a storage closet: the enclosed equipment may need a specified amount of air or a particular installation clearance. Check the appliance manual and applicable local requirements before changing the door or adding grilles. The right opening depends on the equipment and the closet; there is no general vent size or airflow rate that can be prescribed for an unspecified closet.

How should a closet with a heat pump water heater be ventilated?
ENERGY STAR’s Heat Pump Water Heater Design Considerations discusses cases where a unit must be placed in a confined space, such as a small mechanical closet. It advises consulting the manufacturer’s minimum air requirements and describes these passive options:
- A fully louvered door.
- High and low transfer grilles.
- A high transfer grille combined with a ¾-inch door undercut.
For this heat pump water heater closet application, ENERGY STAR calls it best practice to provide “a total minimum net-free area of 240 square inches or greater, with both high and low openings to allow air to circulate.” This is equipment-specific guidance, not a universal requirement for closets. Net-free area is the area available for airflow, so do not assume a grille’s outside dimensions equal its net-free area. Verify the grille’s stated net-free area and the water heater manufacturer’s minimum air requirements.

- Designed to be installed into doors, cabinets, and walls to help increase ventilation.
- Can also be used in conjunction with a fan system to act as an intake or exhaust vent.
- Ventilation grille design maximizes airflow while maintaining frame's structural integrity.
- Features a CNC machined aluminum frame and matching flat screw heads, painted matte white.
- Kit includes (4) wood mounting screws and (4) machine mounting screws with nuts.
When choosing among those options, check whether the arrangement meets the manufacturer’s airflow requirements, provides the required net-free area and high-and-low circulation, and fits the door and closet configuration. Also consider where the unit’s cooler exhaust air will go; avoid directing it toward a frequently occupied adjacent room if the installation instructions or layout make that a concern.

Ventilation elsewhere in the home may help manage moisture, but it is not a closet-specific rule. The EPA says bathroom exhaust should discharge directly outdoors, not into an attic or another enclosed area. Its remodeling and indoor air quality guidance covers that bathroom exhaust advice. If a closet is damp, investigate the moisture source and the broader building conditions rather than assuming a new closet grille will solve the problem.

What to check before adding a closet vent
- Identify the reason. A storage closet with no moisture issue is different from a damp closet or one enclosing equipment.
- Check the equipment instructions. For a mechanical closet, use the appliance manufacturer’s minimum air and installation requirements.
- Verify the local requirements. Applicable code and the actual installation may affect what is allowed or needed.
- For a heat pump water heater, verify net-free area. Use the equipment-specific ENERGY STAR guidance and the manufacturer’s requirements rather than applying its 240-square-inch recommendation to other closets.
- Address moisture at its source. A vent alone may not correct a leak, condensation, or excess humidity.
